The number of new cases of Corona Virus or COVID-19 infection in Africa dropped last week, according to the African Centre for Disease Control (CDC). There were 10,300 cases per day last week, down from 11,000 in the past two weeks. CDC President Dr John Nkengasong said it was “a sign of optimism”. Africa has 1,147,369 cases, more than half of them in South Africa and nearly 26,000 have died. Dr Nkengasong said he was optimistic that the trend was slowing down, but added that it was too early – the virus had to be treated slowly because it was spreading so fast. “We take this story very seriously but we have to be very careful, he said, adding that he does not want people to be too quick to ignore the spread of the disease. He urged people to continue their efforts to prevent the spread of the virus, especially the issue that people need to continue to impose sanctions, provide interventions and conduct testing.
