THE EFFECT OF SPENT ENGINE OIL ON THE GROWTH OF ZEA MAYS (CORN)

ABSTRACT/DESCRIPTION


The effect of spent oil pollution on the growth and performance of Zea mays at different stages of growth was investigated in this study. It involved addition of different quantities of spent engine oil to soils where Zea mays plants at different stages of growth were growing on the plants showed differential response to quantities of spent oil added to the soil. Which five treatments (0, 10ml, 20ml, 40ml, 60ml, and 80ml) of the spent oil were applied to soil in perforated bucket with maize stands at four weeks after sowing. Soil analysis showed that spent engine oil (SEO) had no effect on both the PH and texture of the soil. Organic carbon (C), Nitrogen (N), and Magnesium in the contaminated soil increased compared to the control. There was decrease in concentrations of phosphorus (P) due to soil contamination. Heavy metals (Fe, Cu, Zn, and Pb) concentrations of soil increased with increasing concentration of oil. Plant heights, root length of maize and leaf area of maize plants grown in contaminated soil were adversely affected. The grain yield of the plants in the contaminated soils will be significantly reduced. Spent engine oil should be properly disposed off, since it is seen to retard the growth of plants or destroy the plant entirely.
