EFFECTS OF SOIL EROSION ON INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT STRUCTURES IN NIGERIA(A CASE STUDY OF UMUTU-AGBOR ROAD, DELTA STATE)

ABSTRACT/DESCRIPTION

The project work which is titled “Effects of Soil Erosion on Infrastructural Development Structures in Nigeria (A Case Study of Umutu Agbor Roa, Delta State)”. A wide range of topic is covered, focusing on soil erosion types of soil erosion, factor responsible for erosion in the study area (Umutu-Agbor Delta State Nigeria) which include both natural and human factors. Natural causes of soil erosion include topography, rainfall e.t.c. Human activities include improper waste disposal, poor or faulty construction and lack of maintenance activities and lack of adequate drainage system. Damaged caused by soil erosion on engineering infrastructural development structure such as building, road, bridges e.t.c. have been identified as follows: rendering of bad road, blockage of drainages during rain season, destruction of pavement infrastructure i.e pavement, culvert and drainage. Each item is comprehensively discussed covered and reviewed with respect to various literature review regarding effect of soil on engineering infrastructure development. The method adopted in carrying out this research work is based majorly on field work. The case study area was visited and all necessary observation and findings were made and recorded, photograph of damages structure were taken, interview in the form of both oral and use of questionnaire was administered to residents in order to ascertain the cause, effect and solution to soil erosion menace in the study area. The data gotten were well arranged, analyzed and presented in its simplest form. Various design consideration have been highlighted to aid in construction works.
