##Introduction Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) is a public tertiary institution located in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria. Established to advance science, technology, and innovation, LASUSTECH has evolved from its origins as a polytechnic to a full-fledged university, reflecting its commitment to producing technically skilled graduates for national development. ##Historical Background The institution began as the Lagos State College of Science and Technology (LACOSTECH) in 1977, established by Lagos State Edict No. 1 of 1978 with retroactive effect from June 1, 1977. Classes commenced in January 1978 at a temporary site, now known as the Isolo Campus, offering programs in Accountancy, Business Administration, Banking and Finance, Marketing, and Insurance. On August 1, 1978, the School of Agriculture in Ikorodu was merged with the institution, forming the nucleus of the present-day permanent site at Ikorodu. In 1986, the Lagos State Government renamed the institution to Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH). The transformation into a university occurred on February 2, 2022, when Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu signed a bill converting LASPOTECH into the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH). The university also engages with the public through social media platforms, including its Facebook page and Instagram account, providing updates and insights into campus life and events. ##Academic Structure and Programs Following its elevation to university status, LASUSTECH received approval from the NUC to commence 38 academic programs across five colleges: College of Agriculture: Programs include Agricultural Economics & Farm Management, Crop Production, Agricultural Extension & Rural Development, Horticulture & Landscape Management, Animal Production, and Aquaculture & Fisheries Management. College of Engineering Technology: Offers courses in Computer Engineering, Civil and Construction Engineering, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Biotechnology and Food Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Agricultural Engineering, and Chemical Engineering. College of Environmental Design and Technology: Includes Architecture, Estate Management and Valuation, Quantity Surveying, Urban and Regional Planning, Art and Industrial Design, and Building Technology. College of Basic Sciences: Comprises Industrial Chemistry, Chemistry, Mathematics, Industrial Mathematics, Microbiology, Botany, Zoology, Physics with Electronics, and Computer Science. College of Applied Social Sciences: Encompasses Economic Science, Mass Communication, Accounting, Actuarial Science, Banking and Finance, Marketing, Office and Information Technology, Business Administration, Insurance, and Tourism & Hospitality Management. ##Leadership: Vice Chancellor The pioneer Vice Chancellor of LASUSTECH is Professor Olumuyiwa O. Odusanya. Under his leadership, the university has adopted the "IMPACT" agenda, focusing on: Infrastructural Development: Enhancing physical facilities to support academic and administrative functions. Manpower Development: Investing in the training and growth of staff and faculty. Prosperity and Property: Ensuring the well-being and success of both staff and students. Town and Gown Partnership: Promoting collaboration between the university and the broader community, including industry partnerships. ##Campus Locations LASUSTECH operates multiple campuses to accommodate its diverse programs: Ikorodu Campus: The main campus housing the majority of academic and administrative activities. Isolo Campus: The initial temporary site, now serving specific academic functions. Surulere Campus: An additional site supporting various programs and outreach initiatives. ##Student and Staff Population As of recent data, LASUSTECH boasts a student population of approximately 6,000 and employs over 808 academic staff members, reflecting its substantial role in higher education within Lagos State and Nigeria at large. ##Notable Alumni Over the years, the institution has produced several distinguished alumni who have made significant contributions in various fields, including: Adekunle Gold: Renowned Nigerian musician and songwriter.
