History, Origin, Culture and Traditions of Amesi Town in Anambra state

 
Amesi is a historic town located within the Aguata Local Government Area in Anambra State, Nigeria. The origins of Amesi are deeply rooted in its history, beginning with Akalabo, who migrated and established the settlement now known as Amesi. Akalabo had three sons: Eshi (Amesi), Akpo, and Achina. These three towns are considered sibling towns, sharing a common heritage and culture. Every three years, the Akalabo festival is held to honor the shared ancestry of the people from Amesi, Akpo, and Achina. Eshi, in turn, had four sons: Obinato, Amuwo, Umuocha, and Ubaha. These four villages make up the present-day town of Amesi. In 2018, a new village, Obinabo, was established from Obinato Village, making it the fifth village of Amesi.

##History of ADA
The Amesi Development Association (ADA) was informally established in the 1980s under the name Amesi Improvement Union USA Branch (AIU USA Branch). In its early years, the organization focused on providing scholarships to Amesi indigenes who excelled academically but needed financial assistance to pursue higher education. Dr. Andrew Okpaleke served as the first President, with Chief Godwin Ubanyionwu as the inaugural Secretary.

As the association’s activities began to lose momentum, the late Sir Damian Obiakor assumed leadership as President, with Chief Ubanyionwu continuing his role as Secretary. When Sir Obiakor’s involvement slowed due to health reasons, ADA USA restructured, adopting a more formal organizational framework. New officers were elected, and the association began its current operations.

The Amesi Development Association USA, Inc. (ADA) is a family-focused, community-oriented organization. The purposes of the Association include:

To promote social, economic, cultural, educational, and recreational activities within the Amesi community in the USA.

To foster unity and mutual understanding among Amesi people both locally and abroad.

To engage in community projects that will support economic, educational, social, health, and rural development for Amesi citizens back home.

To encourage members to be law-abiding citizens and collaborate constructively with other legal organizations worldwide.

To address common challenges faced by the members and the community through lawful means and to coordinate efforts to achieve the collective goals of the association’s members.
