FUNGITOXIC EFFECTS OF Azadirachta Indica (NEEM LEAF) AND Ocimum gratissimum (SCENT LEAF) EXTRACT IN THE TREATMENT OF DETERIORATING Solanum tubersome (SWEET POTATO) AND WATER AS STANDARD CONTROL

ABSTRACT/DESCRIPTION


Sweet potato is grown in general for its storage roots, which are eaten fresh, steamed or boiled. Sometimes the leaves are eaten as vegetables or may be processed into flour or starch. The vines are fed to livestock. The primary aim of this research work is to carry out a fungitoxic Effects of Azadirachta indica (Neem Leaf) and Ocimum gratissimum (Scent Leaf) in The Treatment of Solanum tubersome (Sweet Potato) and Water as Standard Control. Four fungi were isolated and identified as Aspergillis sp., Rhizopus stalonifera, Mucor sp., Fusarium sp. Pathogenicity test confirmed that the isolated fungi were the casual agent of the rot. Aspergillus sp culture appear black in PDA plate. It was first white and later turned black. Under the microscope, the mycelium is septet conidophores are long with veside like tips. The tip of each conidophores is spherical to elliptical, smooth or rough walled. It also confirmed the efficiency of extracts of Azadirachta indica and Ocimum gratissimum is in inhibiting the radial growth of the fungi in PDA plates after 7 days of incubation at different concentration levels. Since plant extracts are specific, biodegradable, cheap, readily available and environmentally safer than synthetic chemicals their uses is advocated. It is hereby recommended that bodies responsible for collating research work all over the country and even beyond will double their efforts to see that all active ingredients in plant extracts are researched upon intensively with a view of purifying and concentrating them.
