EVALUATION OF CAFFEINE CONTENT IN SOME SELECTED BRANDS OF DRINKS (BLUE BULLET, MAMBA, MONSTER AND FEARLESS)

ABSTRACT/DESCRIPTION

This project is on the evaluation of caffeine content in some selected brands of drinks the study revealed that caffeine is a naturally occurring alkaloid which is found in the leaves, or fruits of over 63 plant species worldwide. The most common sources of which are coffee, cocoa beans, cola nuts and tea leaves. Four selected energy drinks, Blue Bullet, Monster, Mamba and fearless we purchased. Caffeine was extracted using tetra-chloromethane and the amount of caffeine was determined by using UV spectrophotometer (752N England) at 470nm. The result obtained ranged from blue bullet 4.6mg/l, Fearless 4.7 mg/L, Mamba 4.8mg/L and Monster 4.9mg/L. The caffeine content obtained for the drinks are 44.6mg/L for the Blue bullet, 53.0mg/L for Monster, 66.8mg/L for Mamba and 88.8mg/L for Fearless. The values obtained were quite high and as such the public should take these drinks with moderation to avoid overdose of caffeine in the long run there is also the need for a continuous surveillance by regulatory agencies for food and drugs to ensure that caffeine is not abused through excess consumption of drinks.
