COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECT OF GINGER (Zingiber officinale) AND GARLIC (Allium sativum) ON GASTROENTERIC BACTERIA

ABSTRACT/DESCRIPTION


Acute gastroenteritis is an infectious disease of the alimentary tract that may be caused by one or more bacterial, viral, or protozoal pathogens producing damage, either structural or functional, of variable extent and severity to the mucosa. Acute gastroenteritis is a very common diagnosis in pediatric practices. It is usually a clinical diagnosis. Its most common symptoms are acute vomiting and diarrhea. The three bacterial isolates (Shigella, Salmonella species and Escherichia coli) were all rods like morphologically. Shigella showed gram negative bacillus, Samonella species showed gram negative bacillus and Escherichia coli showed gram negative bacillus. The six stimulates used on the bacteria were catalase , indole, glucose, lactose, H2S and gas and all the bacterial isolate responded to glucose and indole but not responded to catalse and H2S, Samonella species responded also to lactose and gas. While Shigella and Escherichia coli does not respond to catalase and H2S. From this study, it was observed that ethanolic extracts of garlic (Allium sativum) and ginger (Zingiber officinale) exhibited high inhibitory activity on the test organism. Under clinical supervision, Allium sativum and Zingiber officinale can be used for the treatment of gastroenteric bacteria. Gastroenteritis, also known as infectious diarrhea and gastro, is inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract; the stomach and intestine. It is hereby recommended that the importance of ginger and garlic cannot be overemphasized as regards their role in health remedy, so they should be applied in different areas or research such as pharmaceutical and food industries
