ABSTRACT/DESCRIPTION

Curcuma longa and xylopia aethiopica (commonly called turmeric and negro pepper) are medicinal plants used in the treatment of numerous diseases including cough, Conjunctivitis, diabetes, diarrhea, loss of appetite, skin disease, malaria, constipation, utherine, fibroid, e.t.c and also serves as spice . The study findings reveal that the ethanoic extracts of both rhizomes (Turmeric and negro pepper) among different micro organism , Staphylococcus aureus was found to be the most susceptible pathogen to all extracts except water extract at room temperature. It also showed that methanol extracted sample has activities against salmonella. Therefore 100µg/ml gave a zone of inhibition of 19mm which shows high effect of the extract on the organism. Therefore zone of the inhibition were proportional to the concentration of the extracts. For their medicinal activities, the minimum inhibitory concentration on S.aureus and E.coli were 12.50mg and 6.25mg respectively for turmeric, the result extracts may have been used in traditional medicine for prevention of several diseases.
