In 2008, she became the frontwoman of the now-disbanded girl band From Above. The group secured a record deal with Columbia Records and was managed by Mathew Knowles under his company, Music World Entertainment. In November 2013, she landed a brand endorsement with the telecom company Etisalat. Deborah Oluwaseyi Joshua grew up in Tottenham, North London, born to Nigerian parents. Her late mother sang in a church choir, while her father hails from Ile-Ife. She has one older sister and two elder brothers—her sister wrote music for the BBC, and one brother was a well-known radio and club DJ. Raised in a single-parent household by her mother, Shay had a religious upbringing and often felt isolated during her teenage years. She began traveling to Nigeria as a toddler and attended Command High School in Maryland, Lagos. Afterward, she returned to the UK and toured internationally with the London Community Gospel Choir, performing in 13 Japanese cities. Shay pursued higher education at the University of East London, earning an honors degree in Music Business Management. In an interview with This Day, she mentioned that her mother initially preferred she study medicine or law but later supported her artistic path, urging her to trust God and follow her passion.
