Hi there! Today we are going to be revealing the top 20 most recognized Nigerian gospel musicians in 2021. This does not mean that some of the Gospel musicians that their names did not appear in this article are irrelevant, NO! Everyone is unique in their own way. Nevertheless, this list contains the top 20 notable Nigerian gospel musicians in 2021, their background, some of the songs they have released and a little insight on their achievements so far.

1. Nathaniel Bassey

Nathaniel Bassey who was born in 1978 is a Nigerian gospel recording artiste, singer and songwriter, trumpet player and music producer, famous for starting ‘Halleluyah Challenge’, a live Instagram praise session that attracts over 60,000 people, as reported on CNN. Bassey was born and raised in Lagos. He is a native of Akwa-Ibom. He studied International Relations and Politics at the University of Lagos for two years, then he moved to London to continue studying Politics. After studying Politics, he went on to study Music at Middlesex Summer School, where he graduated as the best student. While growing up, Bassey was fond of jazz music. He formed a Jazz quartet called ‘Spectrum 4’ with his childhood friends, after which he was invited to join the Steve Rhodes orchestra, where he played the trumpet for 2 years. While the singer began to rethink the kind of music he made, he decided to create gospel music as a tool for communicating with God. Bassey heads the Trumpet and Ministerial Academy, an educational institution based in Lagos.

2. Dunsin Oyekan

Dunsin Oyekan is a Nigerian gospel singer, songwriter, producer, instrumentalist, and recording artist. He is popularly known as – The Eagle. Dunsin Oyekan is also the convener of the Code Red Worship Experience. Dunsin Oyekan was born on the 5th of November 1984, in Ilorin, Nigeria, as the only son of the Gbadebo Oyekan’s family. He passed through Airforce Nursery and Primary school Ilorin. After his primary education, he proceeded to the Federal Government College Ilorin, for his secondary education, and later left there to continue his studies at the Baptist Model High School, Ilorin,Afterwards, he proceeded to the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, where he studied Industrial Chemistry. Although his wife is late, Dunsin Oyekan was married to Adedoyin Oyekan, and is blessed with two lovely children.

OSINACHI JOSEPH (nee Kalu) popularly known and called by her numerous fans as SINACH, is a multi award-winning Nigerian Gospel music singer, songwriter, and senior worship leader at Believers Loveworld International. She is known globally for several gospel hits songs which include, ‘WayMaker’, ‘I Know Who I Am’, ‘Great Are you Lord’, ‘Rejoice’,’He did it Again’, ‘Precious Jesus’, ‘The Name of Jesus’, ‘This Is my Season’, ‘Awesome God’, ‘For This’, ‘I stand Amazed’ , ‘Simply Devoted’, ‘Jesus is Alive’ and many more. In 2016, she was the first recipient of the LIMA Song Writer of the Decade Award,recognizing her outstanding and undeniable contribution to gospel music in the past decade, with her songs being sung in many countries, translated to many languages, on all continents of the world. Also in 2016 for the second time in a row, she won the Western Africa Artist Of The Year by Groove Awards in Kenya, and was listed by YNaija alongside Chris Oyakhilome, Enoch Adeboye as one of the top 100 influential Christians in Nigeria.

Tim Godfrey is a dynamic music director established as an embodiment of Kirk Franklin unpredictable music ideas. He is a voice instructor, conference speaker, writer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist, producer, presenter, music and Art training consultant, and musical concert clinician. The multi -talented Tim Godfrey, Kaduna born Charismatic musician is the second born of four brothers and two sisters to the family of Mr and Mrs Victor Godfrey. He started his music training right from his teenage age, always found amongst the adult choir in his family church in Kaduna where he obtained his primary and secondary education. Blessings was born in Nkanu LGA Enugu State Nigeria, the youngest of seven children. She graduated from university of Lagos, Blessings got involved in music at a very early age, being a member of the children’s choir in her church and transitioning to the adult choir prior to launching her musical career. Blessings lost her dad and mum at a very young age. Blessings Ng dropped her first single titled Ekele in 2015, 2 years later she dropped her second single titled Jesus Has The Final Say .Her music career soared after her first hit song “Jesus Has The Final Say & I’m So Grateful Ft. James Okon” took the market by storm.

Frank Ugochukwu Edwards who was born July 22, 1989 is a Nigerian contemporary Christian singer-songwriter and recording artist from Enugu, Enugu State. He is the founder and owner of the record label Rocktown Records, which is home to recording artists such as Edwards himself, Gil, Divine, King BAS, Nkay, David, Micah Heavens and among others. Frank Edwards was born into a family of seven. His birth name is Frank Ugochukwu Edwards. He was born in Enugu state of Nigeria. He has five siblings. He began singing at the age of ten. He learned to play the piano from his father when he was young. In his teenage years, he became a born-again Christian. He has six albums and many hit singles to his name. His recent Album Frankincense.

7. Mercy Chinwo

The award-winning and multi-talented Mercy Nnenda Chinwo popularly known as Mercy Chinwo is a beautiful Nigerian born singer, songwriter, and actress. She is a very graceful lady who rose to stardom as she won the second season of the 2012 Nigerian Idol competition sponsored by Etisalat and Pepsi. Mercy was born on April 20 in Port Harcourt, Rivers state and she is the first daughter in a polygamous home. She lost her dad at a young age and decided to take up her musical career after he died. This wonderful vocalist didn’t just appear from the blues, she grew up from one stage to another. First singing in the children’s choir, before moving on to the adult choir and then performing as a backup singer for awesome gospel music artists like Preye Odede, Buchi, Sammie Okposo, Joe Praize and Chris Morgan. She is not known to disappoint her fans with her soul lifting songs even from her very first album she released in 2015 entitled “Testimony” which was produced by Rotimi Keys. She has so far released other motivating songs like “Igwe” which was released a year after testimony. His interest in music began at age four, and when he became eight years old, he joined his church choir, Saint John’s Anglican Church. He later joined a well-known club, Deacons Kids Bands. At first, he loved drumming so much, and according to him, he loved frequent drumming, that it irked his parents. He attended the University of Abuja where he gained a Diploma in Law. Music was not his first love, as he was more into visual arts and paintings. He also attended the Zamfara Federal Polytechnic where he graduated with Office Management and Technology. He is a native of Benue State and has performed with many gospel artists such as Don Moen. And he has continued to make gospel songs and videos.

Nigeria’s Emmanuel Benjamin, aka Eben, is a popular gospel vocalist, songwriter, and minister known for his Afro-pop-, hip-hop-, and dance-influenced sound. Raised in Lago, Nigeria, Eben started out as a rapper, and eventually transitioned to studio work singing backing vocals. From there, he launched his own faith and worship-based performance career, debuting in 2007 with On the Rock, which featured the songs “Imaranma,” “Good Dey,” and “I Don Hammer.” He followed up with several equally popular albums including 2010’s Phenomenon, and 2013’s Justified. Also in 2013, he married fellow gospel vocalist Jahdiel. Magnified followed a year later. 11. Kunle Ajayi

Kunle Ajayi (June 16, 1964) is a Nigerian gospel singer, songwriter, saxophonist, televangelist and Director of Music at the Redeemed Christian Church of God. He was born on June 1964 in Mushin, a local government area of Lagos State, the administrative division of Nigeria, located in the southwestern part of the country. He attended Mushin local council primary school Idioro for his primary education before he proceeded to Eko Boys High School where he obtained the West Africa School Certificate. After leaving high school he went to Ijanikin where he studied music. Formed a band called ‘The Ambassador’ with his group of friends and produced his very first album. He later married his sweet heart at The Apostolic Church Idioro, Mushin. He was ordained as an assistant pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in 1991 and later became a full pastor in 1997 having completed a one-year program at Faith Bible College.[5] He later studied music at Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, ijanikin. He later proceeded to the Royal College of Music in London where he obtained a certificate in music.

Lara George who was born into the family of Oluwole Bajomo in Lagos State, the administrative division of Nigeria is a gospel singer, songwriter and producer. She attended Queen’s College, Lagos before proceeding to the University of Lagos, where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in Architecture. George began her music career at the University of Lagos, where she joined the campus fellowship choir. She was a member of the disbanded musical group Kush, which included TY Bello, Dapo Torimiro and Emem Ema. Her debut album, titled Forever In My Heart, included the hit single “Ijoba Orun”; it was released in 2008. The album earned her several awards and nominations. In 2008, she won Voice of the Year at the Nigeria Music Awards. She emerged the winner of the Best African Female Gospel Artiste category at the 2011 African Gospel Music Awards.

Mr Kayode Solomon Eludiwura popularly known as Kay Wonder is a seasoned and veteran musician whose love for God knows no bound. He started off singing at age five at The Apostolic Church,in Abeokuta Ogun~state where he learnt to play all musical instruments including the keyboard, drumset, and all Strings..etc. Much later, he gradually formed a band with which he performed both gospel and secular music. He had his primary and secondary school in Abeokuta. After relocating to Lagos, he furthered his studies in Lagos State University, Lasu Ojo…from where he bagged his Bachelor of Arts degree in 2013 in the discipline of History and International Studies. During his studies, he launched into career music professionally performing in different strands, genres and at different occasions. Having released four Albums of secular music, KayWonder joined the Redeemed Christmas Church of God after his rededication to God in 2012 at RCCG, Peace House then under the headship of Pst Oladipupo, but currently under the pastorate of Pst Daniel Balogun, a Provincial Headquarters, Province 49. He was at many occasions under the ministrations of Pst J.T Kalejaiye during his special Anointing Services and under the choir leadership of Pst Samuel Folorunsho Foli at Province 7 at Overcomer Assembly Abule-Odu Egbeda Lagos. KayWonder in 2015 joined the RCCG National Mass Choir Under the leadership of Pastor Kunle Ajayi and in the same year was privileged by His grace, to minister twice on the podium during the Holy Ghost Congress, in December 2015 themed ‘Flood Gates of Heaven’, ministering the song ‘Onikokoro Orun’ which got a wide acclaim for its import. Due to popular demand, the Album ‘Flood Gates of Heaven’ was released in August 2016. Four months after, another Album titled “Breakthrough High Praise” was also released and went into market circulation with a more gleeful acceptance.

Lilian, an Energetic Praise Leader was born on (July , 18) She is the 5th child in a family of Six children and from IMO State Nigerian, She has written several songs, which has brought joy to many, telling of the importance of serving God and living a life of holiness. Lilian Nneji released her first album Titled Anointed Praise (Praise Medley) in 2011, she believes in writing from her heart and knowing what the Spirit of God is saying to the Church. She’s Popularly known for her igbo songs rendition at the Rccg monthly programmesShe’s fondly called Odogwu and Praise machine. She is also one of the lead singers in The Redeemed Christian Church of God National Mass Choir. She has graced the stage with Gospel greats like Nathaniel bassey, Pastor Kunle Ajayi, Bukola Bekes etc. She has ministered in several Rccg churches, other denominations and one of music ministers at the Reinhard Bonke Farewell Crusade. She is an advocate of Holy Living and a teacher of the word of God. She serves as the Music Director/Worship Leader at (Rccg Lagos Province 2) and coordinates a music band called ‘Anointed Praise Team’ which plays at weddings, birthday, and other events

Nosa Omoregie, professionally known as Nosa, is a Nigerian recording artist, singer, songwriter and performer. He is currently signed to Chocolate City. His debut studio album, Open Doors, was released on 14 March 2014 and supported by the singles “Always Pray for You”, “Why You Love Me” and “Always on My Mind”. Nosa Omoregie, hails from Benin City, Edo State and studied Engineering in UNIBEN. Nosa started out in the children’s choir in church and is majorly influenced by gospel singers like Fred Hammond and Kim Burrell and the noted R n B group Boyz II men. He later got to love jazz and soul music and then rock, for the simplicity of it. He is also greatly influenced by Afro-Highlife. Nosa’s aim with his music is to create a bridge between music genres while making sure the gospel aspect of it is on a fore-front platform just as the other genres i.e a unique merger of sorts: creatively superimposing a soul tune on a high-life beat, a high-life verse with a rock-y chorus or singing ‘Pidgin’ English with an R n B flavor while proclaiming an inspirational and uplifting message to his listeners.

He has graced the stage with Gospel greats like Marvin Winans, Donnie McClurkinand Panam Percy Paul, as well as successful mainstream artists like Donell Jones, Kenny Latimore, 112, TuFace, D’Banj, Faze, and Styl Plus. He was born Samson Uche Mogekwu in Delta State, Nigeria. He discovered his talent for singing while in high school. It was also in high school he was monikered Samsong.

Sammie Okposo (born 30 May 1971) is a multiple award-winning international Nigerian gospel artist. He is a music producer, psalmist, entertainment consultant and the CEO of Zamar Entertainment. Okposo’s music career started in 1992 when he joined the Nigerian movie industry as a sound track producer and later ventured into full music production. He is credited for producing hit songs for the biggest names in the Nigerian music scene. Okposo is a United Nations Youth Ambassador for World Peace. In 2000 he took the African music scene to another level with the release of his debut album, titled Unconditional Love. The hit track of the album, “Welu Welu”, gained a lot of local and international popularity. In 2004, Okposo was invited to perform at the Martin Luther King Day and July 4th Independence day celebration respectively by the American ambassador to Nigeria.

Evangelist Amaka Okwuoha popularly called Chioma Jesus is a female Nigerian gospel artiste and one of the most popular indigenous gospel songwriter from the eastern part of Nigeria. Chioma Jesus hails from Imo State and she came to limelight through her first song in 2003 titled “Chioma Jesus” Ever since then, her name has been a household name and it has continued to ring a bell in the gospel music world. Chioma Jesus is best known for using Igbo language to write and sing her songs, occasionally seasoned with English but surprisingly, her first ever song was written in Yoruba language. However, her desires and passion is to use her song to win more souls for Christ and to see gospel artistes becoming what God has called them to be. Amaka Okwuoha was given birth to in a poor community in Lagos state, in the heart of an environment that can be described as underdeveloped. But this didn’t hinder her from developing her God-given talent.

He is solely called into Worship Ministry with the mandate of Salvation and Healing. He has been privileged to work very closely with some renowned Gosepl Music Ministers like James Okon, Mairo Ese, Odunayo, Femi Okunuga Michael Akingbala, BeeJay Sax, Bukola Bekes, etc, Born Promise Obinna, the acclaimed Gospel music minister who hails from Imo State. Promise Obinna popularly known as Godstime Promise started music at a very tender age, he was a chorister then ,and discovered that he is moving forward to achieve his goals. With time, he joined a music group GT Band, where he was trained and enlightened. This group enabled him to know more about music. It is with the help of this group that he was able to start as a petty musician. When he started as a petty musician it wasn’t easy but by the special grace of God he was able to overcome the fear and difficulties he faced during the period. He never loss hope because he knew that he is heading to a greater height. God has been showing him his blessings and protection from any form of arrow projected against him. He left the music group in the year 2013 and started music as his personal occupation. He was visiting Churches singing for them and show-casing his God’s given talent. He currently serves as the Music Director/Worship Leader at The Redeemed Christian Church of God (His Dwelling Place & Latter House 61) Lagos.
