USE OF PLASTIC WASTES FOR SOIL STABILIZATION IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION (A CASE STUDY OF EMEDE RING ROAD)

ABSTRACT/DESCRIPTION

This project is limited to the use of plastic wastes for soil stabilization in road construction (sample of plastic waste mixed with soil, soil collected from Emede Ring Road, Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State with a depth of 1m), plastic wastes were used as a possible binder to increase the soil shear strength of road construction. From the result conducted, it indicated that by adding shredded plastic wastes in soil, shear strength, tensile strength and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) value of the soil increase. This can be determined by the values obtained from the test conducted using the plastic wastes in varying percentages to mix with the soil sample in various proportion to determine the Maximum Dry Density (MDD) and Optimum Moisture Content (OMC) respectively. The use of plastic materials such as waste for soil stabilization in road construction involves the use of plastic materials such as plastic bottles, containers, polythene bags and packing trips e.t.c plastic waste is increasing day by day in our environment as a result the amount of waste plastic product also increased. This will lead to various environmental problems such as blockage in drainages, water channels e.t.c. Many of the waste produced today will remain in the environment for many years leading to various environmental concerns. Therefore, it is necessary to utilize the waste effectively with technical development in each field. Findings conducted by various researchers on the possible use of waste plastic for stabilization indicate that by adding plastic strips in soil, shear strength, tensile strength and the California Bearing Ration (CBR) value of the test conducted increased. This helps to stabilize the soil to acquire the better requirement of the soil for the use of sub-base and base course for road construction. However, the experimental use of both mechanical and artificial means for testing for the use of plastic waste for soil stabilization in road construction.
