THE IMPACT OF THE DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS ON THE PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS(A CASE STUDY OF DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS)

The purpose of this study is to explore student’s demographic and academic characteristics that are associated with student’s academic performance during their undergraduate studies. For the purpose of this study work, the secondary source of data collection was used. This data was obtained from 2014/2015 academic session of the department of mathematics and statistics Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro. Sample size of 35 was used in the study. Multiple regression analysis was adopted to test the hypothesis with the aid of SPSS. We observed that the data analysis showed that academic performance as measured by CGPA is not influenced by age and gender of students. Other factors may be responsible for academic performance of students.
