THE EFFECT AND IMPLICATION OF CONTAMINATION ON WELL DRINKING WATER(A CASE STUDY OF OZORO IN ISOKO NORTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA)

ABSTRACT/DESCRIPTION


Contamination analysis of under groundwater resources in Ozoro in Isoko North Local Goevrnment Areas of Delta, Nigeria were carried out to evaluate the portability and quality assessment. Under groundwater samples well collected from four different wells in Ozoro in Isoko North LGAs. The parameters analyze include temperature, PH, conductivity, turbidity, total dissolved solids, chloride, sulphate, phosphate, nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, total suspended solid, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, potassium, iron, zinc, mercury and total coliform count. The test indicated that all the wells water was contaminated. The water showed a Ph(5.28 – 5.11) comparable to the WHO acceptable limit of 6.5 - 8.5 and all the samples PH value are below WHO standard, this could be attributed to the contamination of water with acid from domestic activities. The level of zinc obtain ranges (3.82mg/L – 4.46mg/L) comparable to the WHO acceptable limit of 1.00mg/L, and all the sample zinc value are higher the WHO standard which can cause vomiting to we humans. The level of turbidity ranges from 0.87NTU – 0.73NTU comparable to the WHO acceptable limit of 0.2NTU and all the sample of turbidity value are higher than the WHO standard which can cause hypertension. The level of total coliform count ranges from 110MPN/100ml – 300MPN/100ml comparable to the WHO acceptable limit of 0MPN/100ml. this means that under groundwater in all these four wells has risk of causing water borne disease and need to be treated before usage.
