MICROBIOLOGICAL EXAMINATION OF UNDERGROUND WATER SOURCE (WELL WATER) AT CAMPUS 2 ROAD, DELTA STATE POLYTECHNIC, OZORO
ABSTRACT/DESCRIPTION
Caliform bacteria have been used as indicators of the bacteriology quality of groundwater. The presence of caliform is an index of bacteriology of fecal caliform such as Eschericha coli which is of focal origin. Detection of E.coli indicates recent pollution because the origin cannot survive for long period outside of their natural tract of animals. Therefore, World Health Organization recommended that both treated and untreated water samples should have zero E.coli. An acceptable pH for drinking water is between 6.5 – 8.5, recommended by WHO as a guidelines value, 75% of the water samples studies met this requirement and also in the absence of a distribution system acceptable range may be broader which will also trigger bacteria contamination in drinking water the higher the turbidity level the higher the risk that people may develop gastrointestinal diseases. Turbidity, level should not be more than 5 nephelometric turbidity unit (NTU) and ideally it should be less than 1NTU. All the water samples examined in campus 2 road exceeded the recommended level, non fell within in the range of 0.1-5.0NTU. High turbidity serves as a sign of highly pronounced bacteria activities and it abundance in water. The high turbidity is probably due to increase in concentration of materials released in to the wells through human activities.
