ANTIFUNGAL PROPERTIES OF GARLIC (Allium sativum) AND TURMERIC (Curcuma longa) IN THE CONTROL OF FUNGAL DISEASE OF PINEAPPLE (Ananas comsus) AND THEIR PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS USING ETHANOLIC METHOD
ABSTRACT/DESCRIPTION
Antimicrobial effects of extracts of Allium sativum and Curcuma longa were determined on rot, causing funga diseases in the present work. The pathogenic-fungi was isolated from the infected pineapple fruits parts and identified based on morphological and cultural character were; Aspergillus fiavus, Rhizopus species and Candida tropicalis. Two different extracts of the leaves in solvents (water and ethanol) were used. All the plant extract both aqueous and ethanol show significant reduction of Mycelia growth of isolated pathogens. In aqueous extract of 100% of both Alliums sativum and Curcuma longa had high inhibitory effect of 8.5% and 8.4% on Aspergillus fiavus and 8.3 and 7.2% on Rhizopus specie respectively than 80% aqueous concentration of the test plant extract, while 20% ethanol extract had the lowest inhibitory effect on Candida tropicalis (59%). Higher concentration of ethanol extract favoured higher mycelia growth reduction. Plant extract are accessible for controlling phyto-diseases, and are non-hazardous, eco-friendly, low cost and non-pollutant. It is therefore recommended that the extracts of Garlic (Alium sativum) and Turmeric (Curcuma longa) be researched upon more so that a better result can be gotten for future use.
