The journey of Tansian University began with the vision of its founder, Rev. Msgr. Prof. John Bosco Akam, who strongly believed that education should be both a tool for knowledge acquisition and a means of moral and spiritual transformation. In pursuit of this vision, he sought and received approval from the Federal Government of Nigeria, and in May 2007, the university was officially licensed by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The university started operations at its take-off campus in Oba, Anambra State, before relocating to its permanent site in Umunya.
