The State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), located in Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, Nigeria, stands as a significant advancement in the country’s medical and technological education. ##Establishment and Accreditation
SUMAS was formally established by law in April 2022 as part of the state government’s commitment to expanding educational infrastructure and addressing gaps in the medical and scientific workforce. The institution received its operational license from the National Universities Commission (NUC) in June 2022, officially becoming a recognized state university in Nigeria and the second of its kind in Enugu State.

##Colleges and Programs
The university offers a diverse range of academic programs across its major colleges, structured to cater to emerging trends and needs in healthcare and technology:
College of Medicine: Offers degrees in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS), Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Physiotherapy, and Radiography and Imaging Sciences.
College of Health Sciences: Provides programs in Public Health, Environmental Health Science, Health Information Management, and Nutrition and Dietetics.
College of Applied Sciences: Offers courses such as Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, and Computer Science.

##Leadership: Vice Chancellor
The pioneer Vice Chancellor of SUMAS is Professor James Chukwuma Ogbonna. He is a distinguished Professor of Microbiology and Biotechnology with extensive academic and administrative experience. Prior to his role at SUMAS, he served in various capacities, including Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) and member of the Governing Council at another prominent Nigerian university.
##Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor
The university’s leadership also includes a Chancellor and a Pro-Chancellor who are responsible for providing strategic oversight and representing the university in ceremonial roles.
