The founder of Westland University is Dr Engr Wole Adepoju. According to the university’s own “Our Story” page, the history began in 1984 when Dr Adepoju founded Cedarspring Technical Institute as part of his contribution to technological education in Nigeria. ##History
The history of Westland University, Iwo is one of evolution, ambition and transformation. Its roots trace back to 1984 when Dr Wole Adepoju established Cedarspring Technical Institute – a move motivated by the desire to support youths and promote technological education in Nigeria. 

Over the ensuing decades, the institute evolved, expanded its vision and in January 2019 the Federal Executive Council approved the establishment of Westland University as a private university in Iwo, Osun State. 

On 6 February 2019 the university received full approval to offer degree programmes in 22 programmes across four faculties (Computing & Applied Sciences; Social Sciences; Management Sciences; Media & Library & Information Science). 
In September 2024 Westland University achieved a significant milestone by obtaining its full operational constitutional licence from the National Universities Commission (NUC)
Through these stages – technical institute to full university – the institution has maintained its core emphasis on research, innovation and producing self-reliant graduates. The setting in Iwo also underscores regional development, bringing high-quality tertiary education to a less saturated higher-education zone in Nigeria and contributing to the Osun State educational landscape.

##Chancellor
The Chancellor of Westland University, Iwo is Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, Telu I, the current Oluwo of Iwoland. He was officially appointed Chancellor in October 2025, for a five-year term. 

In his acceptance remarks he expressed gratitude and support for the university’s mission of building a world-class academic environment. As a monarch with advocacy for youth empowerment and education, his appointment brings a symbolic merging of tradition and academia.

##Accreditation and Recognition
Accreditation is a critical issue in Nigerian higher education. Westland University is duly accredited and recognised by the NUC. 

It received its provisional licence in 2019 when the federal government approved four new private universities including Westland. 

More recently, the university secured full operational constitutional licence status in September 2024.
