##Founder

The institution began in 1975 as a “University College” affiliated with the University of Ibadan. Academic activities commenced in October 1976 with 200 pioneering students admitted following an entrance examination, and three faculties: Arts, Science and Education. 

In October 1977, the college attained full autonomous university status with the appointment of its first Vice-Chancellor, Professor O. O. Akinkugbe. 

Over the years Unilorin expanded significantly. It has grown to host 16 faculties, over 100 departments, offering undergraduate, postgraduate and professional degree programmes. 

Its campus occupies one of the largest land masses for a Nigerian university (estimates vary around 5,000 hectares or more) – which gives it room to expand in infrastructure, residences, research parks and green spaces. 

The university has built a reputation for academic discipline and steady operations, often cited for its relatively uninterrupted academic calendar—an uncommon feature in some Nigerian universities. ##Chancellor
The current Chancellor of the University of Ilorin is Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabir Usman, CFR, Emir of Katsina. He has held this ceremonial position since May 2015.

Brief biography:

Born in 1951, he is the 50th Emir of Katsina, a traditional ruler in Nigeria. 

Before his chancellorship at Unilorin, he served as Chancellor of the University of Ibadan. 

As Chancellor, he fulfills the largely ceremonial role of presiding over convocations and representing the university’s ceremonial affairs; operational leadership is vested in the Vice-Chancellor and other principal officers.
His appointment as Chancellor underscores the university’s connection to Nigeria’s broader academic and traditional leadership networks, bridging higher education with national identity and tradition.

##Accreditation and Recognition
Accreditation and recognition are critical markers of institutional quality. The University of Ilorin has several key achievements in this regard:

In May 2025, it was announced that Unilorin secured full accreditation for 36 of the 37 programmes it submitted to the NUC accreditation exercise; the remaining programme (Hausa) received interim accreditation. No programme was denied accreditation.
