##Founder
The University of Benin was established by the then-Midwestern State Government (which later evolved into Edo and Delta States) under a military administration led by Colonel Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia. 
While no single individual is credited as the “founder” in a private university sense, the university’s establishment is a result of government policy in Nigeria in the late 1960s/early 1970s to expand access to higher education. The first phase began in November 1970 when the Midwest Institute of Technology was converted into a university, and on 1 July 1971 it became fully the University of Benin. 

##History
The history of the University of Benin is a narrative of growth, transformation and responsiveness to societal needs. UNIBEN was established on 23 November 1970 as the Midwest Institute of Technology, under the military government of the Mid-Western Region. 

Shortly afterwards, in July 1971, it obtained full university status and was renamed the University of Benin. The institution became fully federally controlled on 1 April 1975. 

From a modest beginning with 109 students and a handful of faculties, the university expanded rapidly to accommodate thousands of students, diversified its academic programmes, established multiple faculties, institutes and centres, and developed a broad research and service mandate. 

Over the decades, UNIBEN has pursued regional and national relevance: introducing innovative programmes (for example, it was the first Nigerian university to award a PhD in Optometry) and pioneering in areas such as industrial chemistry, computer-based testing software, and veterinary medicine in the south-south region.

Brief Biography: Professor Ayatse, the Tor Tiv, hails from Benue State and comes from the Tiv traditional stool. He is a respected academic, scholar and traditional monarch. His appointment as Chancellor reflects the university’s engagement with national intellectual leadership and traditional institutions. Though his role is chiefly ceremonial (presiding over convocations, representing the university in formal occasions), his presence adds prestige and connects the institution to broader societal leadership structures.
