Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), formerly known as Katsina State University, was established by the Katsina State Government in 2006. The institution was created to serve as a center for socio-economic, technological, and political development in the region by producing highly skilled human resources through both conventional and distance learning modes.

The university's motto, "To Learn and to Serve," reflects its commitment to academic excellence and community development. As a public (state-owned) university, UMYU operates under the oversight of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and is affiliated with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

UMYU is located in Katsina, Katsina State, Nigeria, with an urban campus that provides modern learning and research facilities. The university is popularly known by its nickname, UMYU, and maintains an official online presence through its website, umyu.edu.ng.

The governance structure of UMYU includes key figures responsible for its strategic direction and administration. The Visitor of the University is the current Governor of Katsina State, presently Mal. Dikko Radda, Ph.D. The university’s Chancellor is Senator Ibrahim M. Ida (Wazirin Katsina), while the Vice-Chancellor, as of 2024, is Professor Shehu Salihu Muhammad.

UMYU boasts a dedicated team of 532 academic staff members who contribute to teaching, research, and innovation. The university has a total student population of 10,856, consisting of 10,257 undergraduate students and 599 postgraduate students pursuing various academic programs.

The idea to establish Katsina State University was initiated by Umaru Musa Yar’adua, who was the Governor of Katsina State at the time. He later became the President of Nigeria but passed away in 2010. To honor his contributions, the Katsina State House of Assembly passed a law on April 8, 2009, renaming the institution Umaru Musa Yar’adua University.

UMYU officially commenced academic activities in January 2007 with three foundational faculties:

Initially, the university offered 16 undergraduate programs, but over time, it has expanded its academic scope to accommodate more disciplines.

UMYU has a long-term 25-year development plan, which is divided into four strategic phases:

Three initial five-year phases – These phases focus on expanding academic programs, faculties, and departments.

A final 10-year phase – This phase aims to complete the university’s academic growth and solidify its position as a leading higher institution.


By the end of this plan, UMYU is expected to have: 13 faculties, 76 departments and 236 academic programs (undergraduate and postgraduate)

This structured expansion will ensure that the university continues to provide high-quality education and contributes to national development.

##History and Establishment
The idea of establishing a university in Katsina State was initiated by the then-Governor of the state, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’adua, who later became the President of Nigeria. His vision was to provide higher education opportunities for the people of Katsina and beyond. In 2006, the university was officially founded as Katsina State University.

The institution was later renamed Umaru Musa Yar’adua University in 2009 in honor of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua, who played a key role in its establishment. The university was created to address the growing demand for higher education in Northern Nigeria and contribute to national development.

In 2023, Professor Shehu Salihu Muhammad was appointed as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Katsina State University. His leadership was instrumental in laying the foundation for the university’s academic and administrative structure. During his tenure, Professor Shehu Salihu Muhammad focused on:
