##Founder
The founder of the Sports University of Nigeria is Senator Prince Ned Nwoko. 
Brief background: Senator Nwoko is a multifaceted figure—an international lawyer (trained in the UK), a philanthropist, sports enthusiast, investor and politician. 

His passion for sport and education has been longstanding: as early as his time in the House of Representatives (1999 onward) he was advocating the idea of a sports-centered university. 
With the operational licence granted in 2022 by the National Universities Commission (NUC), his vision of SUN as the first of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa began to materialise. 

##History
The history of the Sports University of Nigeria is both short in time and rich in ambition. Though a relatively new institution, its conceptual roots, development journey and first milestones are significant.

The idea was seeded over two decades ago when Ned Nwoko, while serving in Nigeria’s House of Representatives, proposed a bill for establishing a sports university in Nigeria. The process faced bureaucratic delays and political obstacles, but the vision remained. 
On 21 May 2022, the NUC officially granted an operational licence to the university, marking the formal onset of its establishment. 

Located at Idumuje-Ugboko in Aniocha North LGA of Delta State, the campus is situated in the Anioma region, near Asaba, offering strategic access and scenic surroundings. 
Construction of the campus and sports facilities reportedly began around 2017, and the institution slated for take-off by January 2023. 

On 6 March 2025, the university held its first matriculation ceremony, welcoming 98 pioneer students (for combined 2023/24 and 2024/25 sessions). 
The institution is unique in that it emphasises the blend of sports-training (estimated at around 80 % of its model) and academics (20 %) according to statements by the founder. 

As part of its history, SUN has also made strides beyond just enrolments: it emerged as the State Winner at the 2025 National Campus Debate organised by the National Orientation Agency, reflecting its growing academic identity as well.

The Chancellor of the Sports University of Nigeria is also its founder: Senator Prince Ned Nwoko.

Prince Nwoko holds academic qualifications from the United Kingdom, having studied at the University of Keele and King’s College London, where he earned a Master’s degree in Maritime and Commercial Law. 

He is a philanthropist deeply involved in education and sports development, and has invested personally in infrastructure for SUN and other initiatives. 

His leadership style for SUN reflects a mission-driven approach: He speaks of the university as not just a business but a national investment, one geared toward generating Olympic-level athletes and globally competitive graduates.
