##History Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kumbotso, was founded in 1981 by the Kano State Government and originally named Advanced Teacher's College (ATC), Waje. It began operations at the Pilgrims Camp before being renamed the College of Education, Kumbotso, in 1982, and later relocated to Zaria Road, Kano, under the umbrella of the Kano State Institute for Higher Education. In 1987, the institute was decentralized, granting autonomy to several institutions, including Kano State Polytechnic, Kano State College of Education, and Kano State College of Arts, Science and Remedial Studies. Initially, the college operated two campuses—one in Gumel and another in Kumbotso—with the central administration based in Gumel. However, following the creation of Jigawa State, the institution was divided into two separate entities: Jigawa State College of Education and Kano State College of Education. The Kano campus was further split into Wudil (for Sciences and Vocational Education) and Kumbotso (for Arts, Languages, and Social Sciences). Eventually, both campuses were merged back into the Kumbotso location after the establishment of the Kano University of Science and Technology. In recognition of her legacy, the institution was later renamed Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kumbotso, in honor of the late wife of Kano State's first civilian governor, Abubakar Rimi. ##Official Website The official website of Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education is https://srcoe.edu.ng. The website provides information on admissions, academic programs, news updates, and other resources for students and staff. ##Transition to University Status On February 14, 2023, the NUC approved the upgrade of the college to a university, making it the 61st state-owned university and the 221st in the Nigerian University System . The upgrade aimed to address the growing demand for higher education in Kano State and the northern region of Nigeria. The university offered 19 Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) courses across various disciplines, including Science, Information Technology, Arts, and Social Sciences. ##Leadership As of August 2024, the Vice Chancellor of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education was Professor Yahaya Bunkure . Following the reversion to college status in September 2024, the Kano State Government approved the immediate dissolution of the university's management. The Vice Chancellor was directed to hand over the affairs of the institution to his most senior deputy, pending further announcements . ##Facilities and Student Support The institution boasts modern facilities, including state-of-the-art computer laboratories, online learning platforms, and a well-equipped library. In 2023, the university announced a policy of tuition-free education for physically challenged students, a move initiated by former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso . Additionally, the institution invested N370 million in constructing new lecture halls, staff rooms, and other facilities to enhance the learning environment.
