##Historical Background
Rivers State University (RSU), located in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, has its history dating back to its establishment in 1972. Originally founded as the College of Science and Technology, it gained independent university status in 1980 and was renamed Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST). In March 2017, reflecting its expanded academic scope, it adopted its current name, Rivers State University. 

##Establishment and Evolution
The institution began as the College of Science and Technology in 1972, focusing on providing technical and scientific education to support the region's development. In 1980, it transitioned to a full-fledged university, becoming RSUST, and expanded its academic programs to include various disciplines beyond science and technology. 

##Renaming and Expansion
In March 2017, the university was renamed Rivers State University to reflect its broader academic offerings and commitment to comprehensive education. This change marked a significant milestone in its evolution, aligning its identity with its diverse faculties and programs. 

##Current Vice-Chancellor
As of March 5, 2025, the Vice-Chancellor of Rivers State University is Professor Nlerum Sunday Okogbule. Born on September 15, 1960, in Rumuekpe, Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State, Professor Okogbule's academic journey is both inspiring and commendable. 

##Educational Background
Professor Okogbule began his primary education in 1965 and completed it in 1971. He attended Government Secondary School, Creek Road, Port Harcourt, starting in 1972. Despite challenges, including the seizure of his 1976 West African School Certificate Examination result, he persevered and passed the examination in Division One in 1977. He commenced studies at the School of Basic Studies, University of Port Harcourt, in 1979, and later pursued a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1980, graduating with Second Class Honours Upper Division in 1984. 

##Academic and Professional Achievements
Professor Okogbule's academic excellence earned him several scholarships, including the National Merit Award for Undergraduate Students (1981–1984) and the Rivers State Scholarship (1980–1984). He completed his Master of Laws degree at the University of Ife in 1987 and obtained a Ph.D. in Law from the University of Glasgow, Scotland, in March 2012. His career at Rivers State University began in October 1988 as a Lecturer II, and he rose through the ranks to become a Professor of International Law in October 2012.

Throughout his tenure at RSU, Professor Okogbule has held various administrative positions, including:

Coordinator, Law Evening Programme (1993–1995)

Acting Head of multiple departments within the Faculty of Law

Dean, Faculty of Law (April 2014 – January 2018)

Dean, Postgraduate School (March 2018 – March 4, 2020)

His extensive experience culminated in his appointment as Vice-Chancellor on March 5, 2020. 


##Contributions and Recognitions
Professor Okogbule has significantly contributed to legal scholarship, publishing two books, one monograph, twelve book chapters, and over 50 articles in refereed national and international journals. His research on globalization and African development has received international acclaim. Beyond academia, he has served in various capacities, including as a member of the Council of Legal Education and the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers. He is also a committed Christian, ordained as a Deacon in 2012 and an Elder in 2015. He is married to Deaconess (Barr.) Mrs. Uchenda Bibian Okogbule, and they are blessed with seven children and four grandchildren.
