The founder of Phoenix University, Agwada is Senator (Dr.) Abdullahi Adamu, CON. 

Senator Adamu has had a distinguished career in engineering, architecture, public service and politics. Born July 23 1946 at Keffi in Nasarawa State, he initially obtained a National Diploma in Building and Civil Engineering. Later he also earned an LL.B (Hons) from the University of Jos and became a Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. His political career included serving as Governor of Nasarawa State, Senator for Nasarawa West, and National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The founding of Phoenix University is a direct extension of his long-standing commitment to education and capacity building in his home state. As he explained:

“The establishment of the university in a rural setting was part of giving back to society, thereby contributing my personal quota to the educational development of under-privileged people.”

##History
The story of Phoenix University, Agwada is recent but significant, marking an important development in higher education in Nasarawa State. 

The roots of the institution lie in the vision of its founder to provide a high-quality, private tertiary education option within a rural setting. According to the university’s “About Us” page, the university sits on a 45-hectare site donated by the founder in the town of Agwada, which is approximately 40 km from Keffi and under 100 km from Abuja. 

In May 2023, the institution obtained formal approval and registration through the Federal Executive Council after fulfilling initial regulatory requirements, and the National Universities Commission (NUC) issued a provisional license for take-off. 

Academic activities were planned to begin in January 2024, with initial programmes across faculties of Natural and Applied Sciences, Computing, and Social & Management Sciences. 

The mark of the institution’s inauguration came in November 2024 when Phoenix University matriculated its pioneer cohort of 260 students and held the investiture of its first Chancellor. 

From its rural foundation, the university has rapidly been equipping itself with modern facilities: for instance, the approval of a robotics & artificial intelligence laboratory—featuring hardware and software for robotics, drones, VR/AR and 3D printing—was announced in December 2023.

##Chancellor
The Chancellor of Phoenix University, Agwada is Alhaji (Dr.) Muhammadu Indimi, OFR. 

Brief Biography:
Born on 12 August 1947 in Maiduguri (Borno State, Nigeria), Indimi had a modest start, attending an “Islamiyya School” (Makarantar Allo) where he learned Arabic. Through self-instruction and entrepreneurial spirit he mastered multiple languages (Hausa, Fulfulde, Arabic, English, French) and launched his first business venture (a bicycle rental business) in 1963 at age 16. 

Over the years he has become a distinguished businessman and philanthropist: founder and executive chairman of Oriental Energy Resources Ltd., and involved in multiple sectors including oil & gas, manufacturing, banking, finance, aviation, and construction. He also established the Muhammadu Indimi Foundation, which has supported educational institutions, scholarships, IDP housing, specialist medical treatment and more. 

In recognition of his contributions, the Federal Republic of Nigeria conferred on him the national honour of Officer of the Federal Republic (OFR) in 2012. He also holds numerous honorary doctorate degrees for his service to business, education and philanthropy. 

At Phoenix University his role as Chancellor adds prestige, oversight, and a visionary anchor to the young institution.

The NUC list published 25 September 2023 lists “Phoenix University, Agwada, Nasarawa State” as a private university approved in 2023.

In news coverage, the Vice-Chancellor confirms that the university obtained formal approval and registration by the Federal Executive Council on 27 May 2023, and the NUC gave provisional license for take-off
