In February 2018, the National Universities Commission (NUC) granted approval for NMU to commence degree programmes from the 2017/2018 session. 

In April 2018, lectures began at the temporary site for the pioneer students (196 students admitted in the first intake) at Kurutie, ahead of full development of the permanent site. 

A bill to establish NMU as an Act of the National Assembly passed (or was signed) in January 2025, resolving earlier issues around its legal status.

In December 2024, the NUC issued a panel report for the institution’s Engineering programme (Electrical Engineering) that awarded Full Accreditation with a score of 87.39%.

The NUC approved the commencement of undergraduate programmes in February 2018 in the Faculties of Transport, Engineering and Environmental Management.
