Overview and History of Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK)

##Introduction Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), established in 2002, has rapidly evolved into a significant center for higher education in Nigeria. Located in Keffi, Nasarawa State, the university offers a diverse range of academic programs and has made substantial contributions to research and community development. A notable milestone in its history is the appointment of Professor Sa'adatu Hassan Liman as the first female Vice-Chancellor in 2024. ##Historical Development NSUK was established under the Nasarawa State Law No. 2 of 2001, passed by the State House of Assembly. The university came into existence under the visionary administration of Governor Abdullahi Adamu, the first democratically elected Governor of Nasarawa State. The primary aim of establishing the university was to provide an avenue for the indigenes of Nasarawa State to pursue and acquire university education, thereby preparing graduates with adequate skills needed for the development of the state and the country at large. In February 2002, after all the groundwork was concluded by the Implementation Committee, Nasarawa State University was sited in Keffi at the defunct College of Arts, Science, and Technology (CAST). The university officially commenced academic activities in March 2002, following the appointment of an Interim Administrator (Vice-Chancellor), Professor Adamu Baikie. ##Campus and Facilities NSUK's main campus is located in Keffi, a town with historical significance in Nasarawa State. Over the years, the university has developed various infrastructural facilities to support academic and extracurricular activities. Her appointment reflects the institution's commitment to inclusivity and gender equality in leadership roles. ##Background and Academic Journey Professor Liman is a distinguished scholar in Islamic Studies, specializing in women's rights. She began her academic journey with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Islamic Studies from the University of Jos in 1998, graduating with Second Class Honours (Upper Division). She joined NSUK in 2002 and rose through the academic ranks, achieving the position of full Professor of Islamic Studies in October 2017. ##Administrative Roles Throughout her tenure at NSUK, Professor Liman has held various administrative positions, demonstrating her dedication to the university's growth and development: Assistant Dean, Students Affairs Division (2010 – 2012): Contributed to student welfare and extracurricular activities. Deputy Dean, Students Affairs (2013): Played a pivotal role in enhancing student services. Acting Head of Department, Religious Studies (2013 – 2014): Led departmental initiatives and curriculum development. Acting Head of Department, Islamic Studies (2014): Oversaw academic programs and faculty coordination. Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic (2014 – 2016): Assisted in academic planning and policy formulation. Director of Research and Publications (2019 – 2021): Promoted research activities and scholarly publications. Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration (2021 – 2023): Managed administrative functions and institutional operations. ##Contributions to Academia and Recognitions Professor Liman's contributions extend beyond administrative roles. She is the President of the Nigeria Association of Female Teachers of Arabic and Islamic Studies (NATAIS) and holds memberships in several learned societies, including the American Academy of Religion (AAR). Her research has been recognized internationally, and she has presented papers at various national and international conferences, including the 60th Women Assembly of the United Nations on the Status of Women in New York. ##Student Life and Community Engagement NSUK offers a vibrant and engaging campus life that promotes both academic and extracurricular development. Some of the major issues include: Funding Constraints: As a state-owned university, NSUK relies heavily on government funding, which is sometimes insufficient to meet its infrastructure, research, and staff remuneration needs. The university continues to explore alternative sources of funding, such as partnerships, endowments, and internally generated revenue. Infrastructure Development: Despite significant progress in campus development, there is still a need for improved facilities, including additional lecture halls, laboratories, hostels, and libraries to accommodate the growing student population. Academic Staff Welfare and Retention: To maintain high academic standards, NSUK must ensure competitive remuneration and incentives for its teaching and non-teaching staff. Retaining top talent remains a challenge due to better opportunities in federal and private universities.
