##Founder
The university is founded by the Ansarul Islam Society of Nigeria in memory of the late Muhammad Kamalud-deen Al-Adaby (also spelt Kamalud-Deen).

Sheikh Muhammad Kamalud-deen was a distinguished Islamic scholar, educator and reformer in Ilorin and Nigeria more widely. His legacy includes pioneering Arabic and Islamic education reforms, founding schools, and contributing to the intersection of religious and modern learning. ##History
The story of MKU begins with the educational and reformist heritage of its founder, Sheikh Muhammad Kamalud-deen, whose work in the mid-20th century laid the groundwork for advanced institutions. According to archival accounts, he pioneered modern Arabic schooling in Ilorin and beyond, introduced structured classes, curricula and assemblies in Arabic/Islamic schools and later founded the Ansarul Islam Society (1942). 

The vision to elevate this legacy into a full university emerged subsequently. The institution’s take-off site is located on 147.6 hectares in Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State. 

In 2023, the institution was granted a licence by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to operate as a private university under the mentorship arrangement. 

In May 2024, MKU matriculated its first cohort of 146 pioneer students across 13 academic programmes
From these humble beginnings, the institution emphasised innovative entrepreneurship courses, such as a start-up fund initiative for student companies (USD 1,000 per selected team) to bridge academic learning with enterprise.

His Royal Highness has a distinguished background: prior to his enthronement he served as a Justice of the Court of Appeal, and held chancellorships at other universities. 

His appointment as Chancellor brings both symbolic and practical weight: symbolically he links the university to the deep cultural and intellectual heritage of Ilorin; practically, his leadership and network may facilitate institutional partnerships, moral guidance and community alignment.

##Accreditation and Recognition
MKU obtained its licence to operate as a private university under the mentorship model recognised by the NUC in 2023. 

While full details of all programme accreditations are still emerging (given the institution’s newness), the mentorship arrangement and licence signal that the university meets the minimum regulatory requirements to operate.
