##Founder

##History
Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike was born out of the national recognition that agricultural education needed dedicated institutions. The historical background states that it is one of the three Universities of Agriculture established by the Nigerian federal government (the others being at Abeokuta and Makurdi) with the mandate of imparting agricultural education in a scientific and practical way, undertaking applied research and extension services to assist in achieving national self-sufficiency in food and fibre production, and catalysing rural development. 

The enabling law came into effect on 13 November 1992 (Decree No. 48 of 1992). 

The university formally began activities in May 1993 with the appointment of its first governing council and first Vice Chancellor. 

Its first student intake was in the 1993/94 academic session (with a modest number, reportedly 82 students) at the then-Federal College of Agriculture, Umudike premises. 

From that starting point, MOUAU has expanded: acquiring large tracts of land at Umudike, Uzuakoli, Olokoro and Ibeku for teaching, research and commercial agricultural initiatives. 

Over time, the institution has developed faculties, departments and programmes beyond purely agriculture (for example engineering, management sciences, veterinary medicine) to support its agricultural mandate in an integrative way. 

Recently, it has also taken steps to relocate to a permanent site (in Olori, Ikwuano LGA) to enable mechanised farming and research expansion.

Alhaji Abubakar Shehu Abubakar III is the Emir of Bichi in Kano State, a respected traditional ruler in Nigeria. As Chancellor of the university, his role is largely ceremonial—presiding over convocations, representing the institution at key formal occasions, and providing prestige, community linkages and sometimes advocacy. His appointment reflects the tradition in Nigerian universities of naming distinguished leaders from outside academia as chancellors, thereby linking the institution with broader society and goodwill.

In addition, another NUC report (Nov 2024) showed the programme in Hospitality and Tourism Management at MOUAU also achieved Full Accreditation with a score of 89.60%. 

The university is listed in the international higher-education database (IAU World Higher Education Database) under reference IAU-011631, confirming its recognition as a federal university in Nigeria
