Established on May 10, 1999, Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO) holds the distinction of being Nigeria's first licensed private university.  Located in Okada, Edo State, the institution was founded by Sir Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom, with a vision to provide quality tertiary education that aligns with international standards.  The university's motto, "Knowledge & Excellence," encapsulates its commitment to fostering academic rigor and moral integrity among its students.

##History
The inception of IUO was driven by Sir Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion's aspiration to create a world-class educational institution in Nigeria.  The university commenced academic activities in the 1999/2000 session with five foundational colleges: Arts and Social Sciences, Business and Management Studies, Health Sciences, Law, and Natural and Applied Sciences.  The pioneer students arrived on campus on October 15, 1999, marking the beginning of IUO's journey towards academic excellence  .

##Accreditation and Academic Excellence
Igbinedion University is accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) of Nigeria.  Notably, its Law program has received full accreditation for a five-year period, reflecting the university's adherence to high academic standards  . Additionally, the Civil Engineering program is fully accredited by both the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and the NUC  .

##Leadership
The university is led by Vice Chancellor Professor Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye, PhD, FAS, an esteemed academic with a background in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Forensics.  Prior to his appointment at IUO, Professor Ezemonye served as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Benin and was a visiting professor at Lancaster University, UK  .
