Godfrey Okoye University (GOU), situated in Ugwuomu-Nike, Enugu State, Nigeria, is a distinguished private institution established on November 3, 2009.  Founded by the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, it holds the unique distinction of being the first university in Africa owned by a Catholic Diocese. ##Founding History
The vision for Godfrey Okoye University was conceived by Most Rev. Dr. A. O. Gbuji, the Bishop Emeritus of Enugu, who aspired to establish a university that would unify the educational endeavors of the diocese.  Despite initial challenges, the project gained momentum under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, leading to the university's official licensing by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2009.  The institution commenced academic activities in the 2009/2010 session with two faculties and an initial enrollment of 214 students.
