It was officially established on 1 February 1983, with the specific objective of driving Nigeria’s self-reliance in science, engineering and technology. 

At its inception, the university took over the facilities of the former Government Teachers’ Training College in Bosso, Minna—this site became its Bosso Campus. 

In June 1992, a sod-turning ceremony by then President General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida marked the commencement of development on the Main Campus site at Gidan Kwano, along the Minna-Kataeregi-Bida Road, where the university acquired approximately 10,650 hectares for expansion.

Full academic activities on the main campus began around the 2004/2005 session. 

Over the decades, FUTMINNA expanded from its core Schools of Agriculture & Agricultural Technology, Engineering & Engineering Technology, and Environmental Technology into a broad spectrum of departments and research centres. 

In recent years the university has seen important milestones: the accreditation of multiple programmes, the creation of new undergraduate degrees (such as Data Science, Software Engineering and more)

The Chancellor of FUTMINNA is Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, also known as the Deji of Akure

Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi is the traditional ruler of Akure kingdom and thus carries significant cultural and ceremonial status. His role as Chancellor is largely ceremonial—he presides over convocations, gives formal assent to degrees, and represents the university in formal occasions. For example, in June 2024 the university announced that all 17 programmes undergoing accreditation in late 2023 received full accreditation valid for five years. 

FUTMINNA has been designated a Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering by external agencies.
