Brief Biography: Alhaji Umar Faruk II earned a Bachelor of Technology degree in Building Technology from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. He worked with the Nigerian Port Authority between 2002 and 2006, and subsequently held other roles including at the Nigeria-SãoTomé & Príncipe Joint Development Authority before becoming Emir of Katagum in 2010. The appointment of such an individual as Chancellor brings symbolic gravitas and links FUTA’s academic mandate with regional leadership and tradition.

As Chancellor, his role is largely ceremonial—overseeing convocations, serving as a figurehead for the institution, and helping to reinforce FUTA’s public profile and standing.

##Accreditation and Recognition

The National Universities Commission (NUC) gave full accreditation status to eighteen academic programmes during the 2023 accreditation exercise, valid from the 2023/2024 session. 

The university’s doctoral programme in West African Climate Systems (DRP-WACS), in partnership with WASCAL, secured full international accreditation from the High Council for the Evaluation of Research and Higher Education (HCERES) in France. 

FUTA’s Department of Building Technology obtained full accreditation from the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) for its programme, effective January 2023. 

Additionally, FUTA’s Department of Urban & Regional Planning was awarded “Best Department in Nigeria” by the Town Planners Registration Council (TOPREC) in 2024.
