##Motto

##Founder
FUPRE was founded by the Federal Government of Nigeria. It was approved by the Federal Executive Council on 14 March 2007 as part of a broader initiative to establish federal universities dedicated to specific sectors across the country. 

Though no single individual “founded” it in the classic sense, the institution owes its establishment to the collective will of the federal government, the Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the oil & gas industry in Nigeria—recognising the need for specialised manpower in the energy sector.

##History
The history of FUPRE is a story of targeted response to regional and sectoral need, institutional ambition, infrastructure development and academic evolution. The university was conceived in the post-2000 period when the Niger Delta region’s higher education needs and the oil and gas industry’s manpower demands were becoming ever more pronounced. 

In March 2007, the Federal Executive Council approved the establishment of the institution. 

In 2008 the first set of undergraduates were admitted. Initially, the university operated using shared facilities with the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) in Effurun. 

The permanent campus site at Ugbomro, Uvwie Local Government Area in Delta State was developed from 2010 onward, giving FUPRE its own space for growth. 

Over the years, FUPRE has grown its academic programmes, built infrastructure, and strengthened its identity as a specialised university. It has developed multiple colleges—such as the College of Science, the College of Engineering & Technology, the College of Maritime & Offshore Studies, and more recently the College of Computing. 

The university also underwent resource verification visits and gained new programme approvals from the NUC, marking its maturation as a credible higher education institution. 

Importantly, FUPRE’s history is tied to regional empowerment. The Niger Delta region, home to Nigeria’s oil wealth, has had long-standing challenges linked to infrastructure, capacity building and local content. ##Chancellor
The Chancellor of FUPRE is Oba Babatunde Adewale Ajayi (Torungbuwa II), Akarigbo & Paramount Ruler of Remoland. 

Brief biography:
Born on December 5, 1962, Oba Ajayi holds both legal (LLB, LLM) and accounting credentials (FCA), having worked in insolvency and restructuring before his enthronement. 

He ascended the throne as Akarigbo of Remoland in December 2017. 

As Chancellor of FUPRE, his role is largely ceremonial—presiding over convocation ceremonies, representing the institution ceremonially, and providing moral and traditional leadership. However, his presence also underscores the connection between the university, traditional institutions and community anchoring, reinforcing the university’s local relevance while it aspires globally.

##Accreditation and Recognition
As with all federal universities in Nigeria, accreditation and recognition are key to institutional credibility, degree validity and student outcomes. FUPRE is recognised by the National Universities Commission (NUC). Some key accreditation and recognition milestones include:


In March 2025, FUPRE secured NUC approval to offer new undergraduate programmes in the College of Petroleum Administration & Management (e.g., B.Sc Logistics & Supply Chain Management, Procurement Management, Petroleum Information Management, Entrepreneurship). 

In July 2024, FUPRE announced that the NUC had approved full-time mode undergraduate programmes in new domains such as Data Science, Cyber Security, Information Technology, Software Engineering under the College of Computing.

The university is described by the NUC’s annual reports as “the first petroleum university in Africa and sixth in the world.” 

Accreditation exercises in earlier years flagged some challenges (e.g., a 2011 fact-finding panel reported some programmes lacked accreditation at that time) but the institution has since made strides in meeting standards. 

These developments show that FUPRE is in a growth and consolidation phase: expanding programmes, improving resources and aligning more closely with national accreditation requirements while specializing in energy and petroleum disciplines.
