##Motto
While the university does not appear to publicise a succinct motto in the form “____ in action”, its website emphasises phrases such as “Empowering Excellence in Health, Medicine and Research” and “Knowledge and Care in Action” in the context of its identity. 

These statements reflect the institution’s orientation: combining high-quality knowledge (for health sciences) with practical care and research impact. ##Founder
The Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare was founded by the Federal Government of Nigeria under the presidency of Muhammadu Buhari. 

It is one of several “new specialised universities” approved in 2021/2022 by the federal administration, designed to expand access to university education in underserved regions and to focus on strategic fields such as health sciences. The act of establishment (the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare (Establishment) Act 2022) formally gave the university corporate status. 

##History
The history of FUHSA is relatively short but carries significance in context and ambition. The university was officially approved and established in 2021. 

Specifically, the law establishing FUHSA was enacted in 2022 (the “Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare (Establishment) Act 2022”). 

The university’s creation was part of a broader strategy: the government recognised gaps in healthcare human resources, research capacity and geographic access to tertiary health education — especially in the North-East region of the country. By locating a federal health sciences university in Bauchi State (Azare in Katagum LGA), the intention was to leverage regional need and to decentralise opportunity.

In its take-off phase, FUHSA admitted pioneer students for the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 sessions. 

The institution commenced with core health sciences faculties: Basic Medical Sciences, Dentistry, Allied Health Sciences, etc. 

The university already received regulatory approvals: for example, in August 2022, the National Universities Commission (NUC) approved six new courses offered by FUHSA including MBBS (Medicine & Surgery), BDS (Dentistry), BNSc (Nursing Science), BSc Nutrition & Dietetics, B.Rad (Radiography) among others.

The rapid take-off is notable: while older universities spent years developing before accreditation, FUHSA launched with a defined focus, regulatory approvals in place, and the presence of a teaching hospital (the nearby Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Azare) to support clinical work.

##Chancellor
The Chancellor of FUHSA is Alhaji Sama’ila Muhammad Mera, the Emir of Argungu. 

Brief biography:

Alhaji Sama’ila Muhammad Mera serves as traditional ruler of the Argungu Emirate in Kebbi State.

He was appointed as pioneer Chancellor of FUHSA in January 2024 during an investiture ceremony in Azare. 

In his remarks, the Emir pledged to bring fatherly wisdom, support the university’s mission of teaching, research and learning, and emphasised modernising traditional healthcare practices alongside modern medicine. 

His appointment underscores the university’s link with national heritage, local/regional leadership and the expectation of advocacy, moral guidance and external network for the institution.

Though the Chancellor’s role is largely ceremonial in Nigerian universities (presiding over convocations and representing the institution externally), having a figure of his stature helps raise the university’s profile and links it to tradition, community trust and symbolic authority.

##Accreditation and Recognition
Accreditation and recognition are essential for student confidence and programme legitimacy, and FUHSA has made meaningful progress:

The university is listed on the NUC schedule of institutions with establishment year 2021. 
National Universities Commission

In August 2022, the NUC approved six new courses for FUHSA including MBBS, BDS, BNSc, BSc Nutrition & Dietetics, B.Rad (Radiography) among others, signalling regulatory endorsement of key health programmes.

News reports indicate that the programmes MBBS, Dentistry and Nursing were preparing for accreditation (Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, and other regulatory bodies) ahead of 2024/2025 sessions.

According to the “List of Schools – JAMB” the university is recognized and listed among federal universities of health sciences in Nigeria. 

In short, while some programmes are still going through the full cycle of accreditation (a natural reality for younger institutions), the regulatory groundwork is in place and FUHSA is recognised as a legitimate federal university of health sciences.
