##Founder
The university was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria, under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, following advocacy and efforts by Senator Ovie Omo-Agege (Deputy President of the Senate at the time) representing the Delta Central Senatorial District. 

While the term “founder” in the sense of a private individual does not apply, the university’s establishment reflects a public-policy initiative cemented through legislative and executive action — making the federal government (via the Ministry of Education) and its political champions the de facto founding stakeholders.

##History
The history of FUMHS Kwale is recent but is deeply significant for the Ndokwa West region and for Nigeria’s health-education ecosystem. The institution was formally approved in 2023 as one of the federal specialised universities focusing on medical and health sciences.

A key milestone occurred when the Delta State Government officially handed over 215 hectares of land to the federal government for the university’s permanent and temporary sites: 15 hectares for the take-off site and 200 hectares for the permanent campus at Umuseti-Kwale. 

The temporary site is on the campus formerly used by the School of Marine Technology, Kwale; the permanent site lies between Kwale and Emu-Ebendo communities. 

In May 2023, Professor Abel Nze Onunu was appointed as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the university, affirming the institution’s readiness to commence academic activities. 

On October 7, 2025, the university was officially listed on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Central Admission Processing System portal, enabling admission of students for the 2025/2026 session. 

The founding narrative is as much about regional development as it is about higher education: the Ndokwa nation hailed the institution as a long-awaited federal presence and a step towards breaking decades of under-investment in tertiary education within the zone. 

Though the university is in its infancy (with academic programmes launching incrementally), the groundwork — land provision, regulatory registration, staffing, and infrastructure planning — has been robustly underway. As recently as September 2025, the Delta State Governor pledged full support to ensure that the university proceeds from “take-off” to full-fledged operation.

##Chancellor
At the time of writing, I was unable to locate a publicly confirmed name of the Chancellor (the ceremonial head) of FUMHS Kwale from accessible sources. The Pioneer Vice-Chancellor is Prof. Abel Nze Onunu, but the Chancellor role remains unspecified in publicly available materials as of this date. 

Should additional official documentation become available, an update will be warranted. Prof. Abel Nze Onunu’s brief biography:

Born in 1962 in Obiaruku, Ndokwa West LGA, Delta State.

He is a medical doctor, specialising in Internal Medicine, Dermatology and Infectious Diseases, affiliated with the University of Benin, Edo State. 

He served as Vice President of the West African College of Physicians and is a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Medicine.

His appointment as Vice-Chancellor took effect on 28 May 2023, for a tenure of five years. 

Given his professional background and local origin, Prof. Onunu brings both medical-academic expertise and regional insight to the nascent university.

##Accreditation and Recognition
The accreditation and recognition of FUMHS Kwale are critical for prospective students, given the specialised nature of medical and health education. Key points include:

The university appears on the list of institutions as at April 2024 published by the National Universities Commission (NUC) as “Federal University of Health Sciences, Kwale, Delta State” with establishment date 2023.
