Coal City University was officially licensed by the national regulator, the National Universities Commission (NUC), on 22 November 2016, thereby becoming one of Nigeria’s newer private universities. On opening, CCU began with two initial faculties — the Faculty of Arts, Social & Management Sciences, and the Faculty of Natural & Applied Sciences — and just 81 pioneer students. The origin story is rooted in the early 2000s: in August 2003, a bill was presented to the Enugu State House of Assembly to establish the university, sponsored by Hon. David Atigwe, and subsequently signed into law by Governor Chimaroke Nnamani. The concept was to create an institution that would not only teach but transform, offering an educational alternative grounded in entrepreneurial skills, industry relevance and international orientation. For instance, CCU announced that part of its mission would be to emphasise coal-research, clean-energy and entrepreneurial skills — tying into the “Coal City” heritage of its location. Over the years, CCU has grown steadily. Its faculties, programme offerings, and student numbers have expanded, and accreditation of new programmes has been achieved, indicating maturation of the institution.
