##Motto

##Founder
While BUK does not attribute its founding to a single individual in the way some institutions do, its earliest institutional form emerged from the legacy of other bodies. It began as part of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU) system (specifically as a college under ABU) before becoming autonomous. 

The name “Bayero” honours the royal family of Kano, with Emir Abdullahi Bayero being a key figure in the university’s identity. So while “founder” isn’t a single person in the typical sense, the university’s transformation owes much to institutional evolution and the contributions of many stakeholders in the region.

##History
The history of Bayero University, Kano is rich, layered and reflective of regional educational development in Nigeria. The roots trace back to the early 1960s when higher education in the Northern Region of Nigeria was expanding and there was a growing demand for institutions in areas outside the south. 

Initially, the institution began as the Ahmadu Bello College set up in 1960 within the School for Arabic Studies in old Kano city. In 1962, with the establishment of Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, the college was renamed Abdullahi Bayero College. In 1964, it moved to a temporary site at the former Kano Airport Hotel, enrolling its first undergraduate students for a BA programme of ABU. 

In 1975, Abdullahi Bayero College was elevated to the status of a University College, with the right to award degrees on behalf of ABU, and renamed Abdullahi Bayero University College. Shortly after, when all university-colleges in Nigeria were upgraded to full universities in 1977, it became Bayero University, Kano (BUK) under Decree No. 79 of 1979. 

From those beginnings, the university has grown substantially. It now runs numerous faculties and departments, hosts thousands of students (undergraduate and postgraduate) and over time has developed multiple campuses and research centres. It has also moved through various vice-chancellorships, expanded its infrastructure and deepened its academic and research capacities. 

Over the decades, BUK has not just grown in size but also matured in mission: from training undergraduates to offering postgraduate, professional and research programmes; from being regionally rooted to aspiring globally; and from being a response to educational demand to being a shaper of ideas, policy and community development.

##Chancellor
The Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano is Ibrahim Kolapo Sulu-Gambari, CFR, the Emir of Ilorin. 

Brief Biography:
Born 22 April 1940, Sulu-Gambari is a distinguished jurist and traditional ruler. He attended Native Authority School, Ilorin, followed by further education in England — including Middle Temple and the University of London — before returning to Nigeria and holding roles such as Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal. 

As Chancellor, his role is largely ceremonial — symbolising the university’s heritage, providing leadership and moral anchor, and representing the institution in formal settings. His background as a traditional ruler and senior jurist brings a unique blend of scholarship, governance and cultural standing, reaffirming BUK’s link to both tradition and academic excellence.

##Accreditation and Recognition
Accreditation and recognition are critical for any university’s credibility, and BUK performs strongly in this regard. The university is recognised by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in Nigeria. 

Key highlights:

In the October/November 2024 accreditation exercise, BUK recorded outstanding success: 53 academic programmes across faculties were evaluated and all received full or accredited status. 

In December 2024 the university’s Early Childhood & Primary Education programmes were commended by accrediting teams for their infrastructure, e-library resources, and physical development. 

Earlier in 2016 the NUC accredited 25 programmes at BUK across 10 faculties with an average score of 86.7 %.
