##Founder
The university honours the legacy of Alvan Azinna Ikoku, a pioneering educator in Nigeria who founded the first African-owned secondary school in Nigeria (Aggrey Memorial Grammar School) and served as President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) for many years.

##History
Founded in April 1963, the institution began life as the Advanced Teachers’ Training College in Owerri — established by the then Eastern Nigeria Government with technical assistance from UNESCO. 

It was charged with implementing aspects of the Ashby Commission’s recommendations on higher education expansion in Nigeria. Over time, the institution evolved: in 1973, by Edict No. 11 of the then East-Central State, it became the Alvan Ikoku College of Education (AICE), with a mandate to train teachers for the region. 

When it became a college of education, it began with 150 students, and by 2012 it had grown to over 13,000 students and more than 600 academic staff, offering NCE, PDE and, via affiliation with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Bachelor of Education degrees since 1984. 

In 2007 the Federal Government assumed full control, and the institution became the federal College of Education (AIFCE) which enabled significant infrastructure improvement, new departments and expanded offerings. 

Then, after many years of aspiration, the federal government formally upgraded the institution to full university status in October 2023 as a Federal University of Education.

This milestone positioned AIFUE to admit its own degree-students (not merely via affiliation) and expand its mandate, marking a key chapter in its growth.

##Chancellor
The current substantive Vice-Chancellor (the chief academic and administrative officer) of AIFUE is Professor Stella Ngozi Lemchi, who assumed the position on 23 January 2025 for a non-renewable tenure of five years. 

Brief biography:

Born 11 September 1969 in Imo State. 

Earned B.Sc in Home Science & Nutrition (1990), M.Ed in Home Economics Education (1994), and PhD in Home Economics Education (2006) — all from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Began her academic career at UNN (Department of Home Science, Nutrition & Dietetics) in 1991; moved to Alvan Ikoku as Lecturer III in 1995. 

Rose through the ranks: Head of Department (2011-2014), Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurship Education (2015-2019), Deputy Provost (2019-2022), Provost (2022-2024). 

As Vice-Chancellor, she is described as a visionary leader committed to transitioning the institution effectively into its university status, with special focus on education relevance and access for the girl-child.

Her appointment reflects the institution’s commitment to strong academic leadership and transition management during this pivotal era.

##Accreditation and Recognition
