##Founder
While AE-FUNAI is a federal institution founded by the Nigerian federal government, the university bears the name of Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme (the late Vice President of Nigeria, 1979–1983) in honour of his contributions to national development and education. 

Though the “founder” in legal terms is the federal government (via its Act of establishment), naming the institution after Dr Ekwueme symbolically ties the university’s identity to his legacy of service, integrity and leadership.

##History
The history of AE-FUNAI is both brief and dynamic—reflecting the rapid pace of change in Nigeria’s higher education sector. The university was formally established by the Federal Government of Nigeria on 26 February 2011 alongside eight other federal universities, with the objective of expanding tertiary education access across all geo-political zones. 

However, although the legal foundation was in 2011, academic activities did not begin immediately. The institution began teaching on 5 November 2012. 

Initially named the Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ikwo (FUNAI), the university was later renamed on 2 February 2018 as Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike (AE-FUNAI) in honour of Dr Ekwueme. 

The university is sited on approximately 438 hectares of land in Ikwo Local Government Area in Ebonyi State—land handed over by the Ebonyi State Government for this purpose. 

In its early years, the institution made a strategic decision to build foundational infrastructure (laboratories, lecture halls, administrative blocks) and to ensure that its programmes were robust and well-designed before full-scale expansion. 

Over the years, it has grown its faculties (reaching 11 colleges/faculties), added a College of Medicine, a School of Postgraduate Studies, and expanded its academic departments and programmes. 

What makes this history significant is not just the timeline, but the ambition to become more than a local university. From the beginning, the vision was to “become a vibrant centre of learning and research that will be reputable nationally and internationally and a hub for the economic transformation and development of the region through creative and innovative endeavours.”

##Chancellor
The Chancellor of AE-FUNAI is Oba (Dr.) Michael Aremu Adedotun Gbadebo CFR, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland. 

His appointment underscores the tradition in many Nigerian federal universities: to have a respected traditional or public figure serve as ceremonial head of the institution. While much of the administrative and operational leadership lies with the Vice-Chancellor and management, the Chancellor plays a symbolic and ambassadorial role—helping to enhance the university’s profile, represent it at key events (convocations, council meetings) and draw on networks that facilitate growth.

According to the university’s own 10-year review, it has 11 Faculties, 41 academic departments, and 57 programmes, all approved by the regulatory body (National Universities Commission (NUC) and associated professional bodies. 

Notably, within that review, the Engineering, Medical and Accounting programmes were reported to have accreditation from their professional bodies (e.g., Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria – COREN; Nigerian Medical and Dental Council – NMDC; Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria – ICAN). 

The university is also listed in global university rankings (such as the Times Higher Education World University Rankings) in the range 1001–1500 in 2025 for impact and young universities rankings.
