##Founder
ADUN was founded through the efforts of the Nigerian Navy (via its investment arm, Navy Holdings Limited) in partnership with Hellenic Education Nigeria Limited (HENL). 

Originally established as a private university (licensed by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in December 2017) and commenced academic activities by January 2019, ADUN later became the subject of legislation (“Admiralty University of Nigeria, Ibusa (Establishment) Act 2022”) which converted it into a public-university status.

##History
The history of ADUN is relatively recent but characterised by purposeful milestones and strategic transformation. The university was officially licensed as a private institution by the NUC on 19 December 2017 and planned to commence academic activities in 2018/2019. 

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas, announced in 2018 that the university would begin degree programmes in three faculties (Arts & Social Sciences, Management Sciences & Science) in October 2018, with future faculties of Medicine, Engineering, Law and Pharmacy planned for 2019. 

Academic activities began and in May 2019 the institution matriculated its first batch of 231 students in Ibusa. 

The university was conceived to meet both the training needs of the Navy (and sister services) and the broader national need for skilled manpower, and to reduce reliance on foreign training and the consequent drain on foreign exchange. 

In March 2022, following a dissolution of the PPP partnership between the Nigerian Navy’s NHL and HENL, the Nigerian Navy bought out the private partner’s interest. A bill for converting the university to public status was passed by the National Assembly in December 2022 and assented by President Muhammadu Buhari on 8 February 2023 as the Admiralty University of Nigeria, Ibusa (Establishment) Act 2022. 

As of 2023/24 the university is in the process of transition from private to public status; the Navy has stated that while the Federal Ministry of Education and the NUC are yet to complete formal adoption, the institution continues to operate and grow under the transitional governing council.

While specific publicly accessible detailed biography of the Chancellor at ADUN is less prominent than that of the Vice-Chancellor, the substantive Vice-Chancellor appointment has been announced: Professor Christopher Bankole Ndubisi Ogbogbo (a Nigerian academic and lawyer) has been appointed as the substantive VC of ADUN, effective early March 2025. 

Brief biography:

Professor Ogbogbo holds a B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. in History from the University of Ibadan, as well as LLB and LLM degrees from Obafemi Awolowo University and a professional law qualification from the Nigerian Law School. 

He is a Professor of History, a Senior Member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), former National President of the Historical Society of Nigeria, and has over 36 years of teaching experience, supervised many doctoral and master’s research, and held visiting appointments internationally. 

His research interest includes African history, security issues, nation-building, and he has received multiple research grants from prestigious sources. 

While the Chancellor role is more ceremonial, the leadership of Professor Ogbogbo as VC signals ADUN’s aspiration for academic rigour, interdisciplinary scholarship and professional breadth — bridging humanities, law, management, science and maritime studies.
