The story of AFUED is one of evolution, adaptation and growing ambition. The institution began life in 1963, established to produce qualified teachers for secondary schools and teacher training colleges in the region. 

It formally commenced operations on 22 May 1964 with an initial cohort of 93 students (24 women and 69 men). 
Over time, it grew in size, reputation and programme offering. Initially known as a college of education, it expanded to run multiple Schools (Arts & Social Sciences; Education; Languages; Sciences; Vocational & Technical Education) and numerous academic departments. 

As the educational demands in Nigeria grew – including the need for more degree-holding teachers, stronger research capacity, and multi-disciplinary teacher preparation – the institution began a transition to federal university status. The upgrade to a federal university became part of a broader national policy to convert specialised colleges of education into degree-granting universities of education. 

In May 2024, the National Universities Commission (NUC) approved 25 new academic programmes for AFUED. 

This evolution from college to university is significant: it expanded the institution’s mandate beyond simply teacher preparation at certificate levels, to delivering full undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, broadening its research capacity, and aligning with global standards in higher education. Born 28 April 1963 in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State. 

Holds a B.Ed (English/Education) in 1987, then an M.Ed (Guidance & Counselling) in 1995, and a Ph.D in Guidance & Counselling in 2003 from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife. 

His academic career includes roles such as Head of Department of Educational Foundations & Counselling, Deputy Provost of the Postgraduate College, and Dean of Faculty of Education at OAU. 

Upon appointment, he emphasized that his task is to “lay the foundation of a University destined to become a centre of excellence in teacher education, research, innovation, and national development.” 

Thus, he reflects both continuity (deep roots in education) and forward-looking ambition (expanding the university’s reach and quality).

##Accreditation and Recognition
AFUED has secured several important recognitions:

The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) granted full accreditation to the institution to run its Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) programme. 

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) accredited the accounting programme of its Department of Business Education.
