Education
In a world where languages are constantly evolving—and sometimes disappearing—choosing to study Yoruba at the university level is a meaningful step toward cultural preservation, identity, and pride. Yoruba isn't just a language; it’s a living expression of a people’s history, philosophy, values, and creativity. It carries centuries of oral tradition, proverbs, literature, and indigenous knowledge that still shape communities today. Whether you grew up speaking Yoruba at home, or you’re simply fascinated by African languages and culture, pursuing a degree in Yoruba allows you to do more than just speak the language—it gives you the tools to read, write, analyze, and promote it academically and globally. In this blog, we’ll cover: A list of Nigerian universities offering Yoruba as a degree course The JAMB subject combination you’ll need The O’level requirements for admission
##What is Yoruba Course?
Yoruba refers to both a vibrant ethnic group and a widely spoken language found mainly in Nigeria and some neighboring countries. The Yoruba people are among Africa’s largest ethnic communities, renowned for their rich cultural heritage that includes unique traditions in music, art, and spirituality. The Yoruba language belongs to the Niger-Congo family and is spoken by millions across the region. It features several dialects and is particularly known for being tonal—where the pitch or intonation of a word can change its meaning entirely. More broadly, Yoruba also encompasses the customs, beliefs, and history that shape the identity and way of life of the Yoruba people.
