Ebonyi State, located in the southeastern region of Nigeria, hosts a number of federal, state, and private universities. These institutions offer varied academic programmes and serve both the local population and students from other parts of Nigeria. Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike (AE-FUNAI): Established in 2011, formerly called Federal University Ndufu Alike Ikwo, this federal university is named after Dr. Alex Ekwueme. It is located in Ikwo Local Government Area. AE-FUNAI offers a wide range of programmes across faculties including Agriculture, Basic Medical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Education, Engineering & Technology, Environmental Sciences, Humanities, Management Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences. 2. David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS), Uburu: Founded more recently (around 2021), this specialized federal university focuses on health sciences. Located in Uburu, Ebonyi State, its academic units include the College of Medical & Health Sciences, Dentistry, Basic Medical Sciences, Nursing Sciences, Allied Health Sciences, and Pharmaceutical Sciences. ##State 3. Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki: EBSU started as a faculty of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) in 1987 and later became an independent state university in 1999. It is the first and currently the only state-owned university in Ebonyi State. Its faculties include Agriculture & Natural Resources Management; Basic Medical Sciences; Biological Sciences; Education; Engineering & Environmental Sciences; Health Science & Technology; Law; Medicine; Management Sciences; Physical Sciences; Social Sciences. 4. King David Umahi University of Medical Sciences (KDUMS), Uburu: Another state-owned university which specializes in medical sciences, KDUMS is affiliated with state ownership. It focuses on producing healthcare professionals, offering courses suited to training in medical/health fields. ##Private 5. Evangel University, Akaeze Evangel University is a private, faith-based institution established in 2012 by the Assemblies of God Church, Nigeria. Located in Akaeze (initially operating at Okpoto), the university’s colleges include Management Sciences, Arts & Social Sciences, Science, Health Sciences, plus a School of General Studies and Entrepreneurship Unit. It is committed to providing quality education grounded in Christian values.
