##Federal Universities
1. University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID):
The University of Maiduguri is one of the oldest and most well-established federal institutions in Borno State, established in 1975. Located in Maiduguri, it offers a wide range of academic programmes including Medicine, Engineering, Law, Social Sciences, Agriculture, and more. It also has a teaching hospital and plays a lead role in academic research and development in the northeast.
2. Nigerian Army University, Biu (NAUB):
The Nigerian Army University in Biu is a newer federal institution, established in 2018. 3. Borno State University (BSU) / Kashim Ibrahim University, Maiduguri
Originally established in 2016 as Borno State University, it was renamed Kashim Ibrahim University in January 2025 in honour of Sir Kashim Ibrahim. Situated in Maiduguri, this state-owned institution offers a growing number of programmes across faculties such as arts, sciences, education, management, and social studies. Over time, the university has expanded its infrastructure, inaugurated its Senate building, and appointed substantive leadership, reflecting its commitment to improving state-level higher education access and quality.

4. Al-Ansar University, Maiduguri:
Al-Ansar University is the first fully licensed private university in Borno State, approved in 2020. Located in Maiduguri, it provides programmes in arts and humanities, social and management sciences, and pure/applied sciences. With its establishment, Al-Ansar adds to the diversity of options for students seeking private tertiary education in Borno, emphasizing environmental safety, moral values, innovation, and academic excellence.
