History, Origin, Culture and Traditions of Uzuakoli Town in Abia State

Uzuakoli is a region in Abia State, located in Nigeria’s southeastern zone, comprising multiple small villages. The area has a rich and complex history, known for once hosting a prominent Methodist educational institution, a bustling trading center, underground slave dealings, a leprosy colony, and the celebrated Ila Oso cultural event. It is situated in the cultural core of Igboland. Archival records at the University of California include a 1924 photograph capturing Methodist missionaries stationed in Uzuakoli. In 1964, learners from the Methodist College in Uzuakoli documented a concise account of the town’s past. Additional photographs featuring people from the area are preserved in historical collections. ##Prominent Individuals from Uzuakoli Chinedu Ikedieze (b. 1977): A renowned Nigerian actor, entrepreneur, and investor. Mike Ezuruonye (b. 1982): A well-known Nigerian film star. Bernard Batty: One of the pioneering Methodist preachers connected to the area, whose sons studied at Elmfield College in York, UK.
