History, Origin, Culture and Traditions of Obgunka Town in Anambra state

 
Ogbunka is a settlement in the Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria. It consists of five villages: Awuka, Umunobe, Akwuoba, Agbala, and Isiokpu.

Villages: 
Ogbunka is made up of five villages: Isiokpu, Awuka, Agbala, Umunobe, and Akwuoba.

Isiokpu Village:
The inhabitants of Isiokpu trace their lineage to Isisekpunti, the first son of Ogbu. Located at the heart of the town, it is surrounded by the other villages. Consequently, it does not share a boundary with any of the neighboring communities outside Ogbunka. The people of Isiokpu play a crucial role in addressing community-wide matters. The village is home to two smaller clans, Umudiala and Umu-Echem, which together represent about seven percent of the total population. Historically, the villagers of Isiokpu ceded their birth-right of decision-making to Awuka in exchange for protection from external threats, a practice that has remained significant since ancient times.

Awuka Village: 
Awuka’s residents are descendants of Onwuka, the second son of Ogbu. Situated on the eastern side of Ogbunka, Awuka shares borders with Owere-Ezukala and Awlaw. It is the largest village, accounting for thirty-five percent of the population, and has traditionally produced the majority of the town's paramount rulers since the 19th century. Known for their warriors, the people of Awuka led the town to numerous victories in battles. The village is divided into thirteen administrative wards, and its residents are known for being friendly, lively, and talkative.

Agbala Village:
Agbala is inhabited by the descendants of Okparanaku, the third son of Ogbu. Located on the western edge of the town, it borders Umunze. Agbala contributes ten percent of Ogbunka's population and is organized into six administrative wards.

Umunobe Village: 
Umunobe is home to the descendants of Nobe, Ogbu’s fourth son. The name Umunobe translates to "children of Nobe." This village is situated on the northern side of Ogbunka and borders Awlaw, Eziagu, Nawfija, Ufuma, and Umunze. It covers the largest land area and comprises thirty percent of the community's population. Umunobe’s people are well-known for their courage and strong sense of unity, demonstrated during their defense of Awuka against an attempted invasion by Owere Ezukala. The village is geographically distinct from the rest of Ogbunka, with its own primary school, early churches, and other facilities. Umunobe is divided into ten administrative wards.

Akwuoba Village:
Akwuoba’s residents are the descendants of Oba, the youngest son of Ogbu. Located on the southern side of Ogbunka, it borders Eziama and Nkerefi communities. Akwuoba makes up about eighteen percent of the town’s total population. Historically, the village was renowned for its Agbara shrine, an oracle consulted by people from far and wide to seek answers to mysterious situations. The village consists of six administrative wards. The people of Akwuoba are known for their easygoing nature and lack of grudges.
