History, Origin, Culture and Traditions of Nsit Atai Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State

 
Established in 1996, the Nsit Atai administrative district was carved out under the leadership of General Sani Abacha, with its central hub situated in the town of Odot. The jurisdiction covers part of a total landmass measuring around 17,000 square kilometers and includes 62 distinct communities.

##Geographical Position
Nsit Atai is located in the southeastern corridor of Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria. It is one of the local council areas within the state, positioned approximately 50 kilometers away from Uyo, the state capital. It shares borders with Uruan to the north, Okobo to the east, and Ibesikpo Asutan Ekpe to the west. The coordinates are approximately 4°51'0"N, 8°01'0"E.

##Governance
Rt. Hon. Emem Ibanga currently presides as the executive chairperson of the council and is notably the first woman to hold this post. She is originally from Ikot Akpabio village, a section of Afaha Ndisiak in the Afaha group. She has a university degree in political science and public administration. In 2020, she was temporarily removed from office over allegations of financial impropriety but was later reinstated by the state legislative assembly.

The people of Nsit Atai are of Ibibio descent, speaking the Ibibio language as their primary means of communication. Traditional expressions such as Ekpo, Ekong, Eko-ong Utah, and Egre reflect their vibrant cultural heritage through dance and performance.

According to data from the 2006 national headcount, the population of Nsit Atai stood at 101,915 residents, comprising 37,318 males and 74,595 females.

##Education System
The educational framework in the area includes early childhood, elementary, and secondary institutions. The region hosts 13 nursery schools, 25 primary schools, 9 high schools, and 26 adult literacy centers. Unfortunately, many of these facilities suffer from infrastructure decay and poor learning environments, with a teacher-to-learner ratio averaging 1:50.

Additionally, the national orientation camp for the NYSC (National Youth Service Corps) in Akwa Ibom is situated within this local government area.

Nsit Atai is served by a single general healthcare facility, a basic health center, and two community health outposts. While some locations are equipped with modern buildings and medical tools, challenges in staffing and equipment availability persist.

Natural endowments in the area include petroleum reserves, sizable salt deposits, and rich clay resources. On the agricultural side, the region produces oil palm, plantain, and associated crops.
