Basis
Ikot Okoro is a rural community located in Akwa Ibom State, which was once one of the largest population hubs in the former South Eastern Nigeria region. Today, it is smaller in size and situated approximately 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) southwest of the regional capital, Abak. The people of Ikot Okoro have been advocating for the establishment of a new Local Government Area (LGA) separate from the current Oruk Anam LGA. Oruk Anam LGA is one of the largest in Nigeria, and as a result, grassroots development has been slow to reach many areas within the LGA, including Ikot Okoro. It is important to note that previous administrations have overlooked this once thriving and vibrant region. Many locals believe that the creation of Annang State, or the proposed ITAI state, will help Ikot Okoro regain its former prominence.
Ikot Okoro is home to several key facilities, including a general hospital (Ikot Okoro General Hospital), a magistrate court, a police station, and a post office. During its peak, traders from the eastern part of Nigeria, particularly from Arochukwu in Abia State, settled in Ikot Okoro. The settlement currently has a secondary school and two primary schools, and it is connected to the national power grid with reliable telecommunications coverage from all the major wireless service providers in Nigeria. A recent improvement is the road construction linking Ikot Ntuen through Asanga to Urua Atim, which has revitalized commercial activity in the area after nearly 40 years of neglect due to the ethnic politics that unfolded in Akwa Ibom State after the civil war.
Visitors to Ikot Okoro will find a warm reception and a strong sense of community. The people are known for their friendliness, making it an excellent place to experience local customs and traditions. The area is rich in cultural heritage, with traditional dances, ceremonies, and festivals regularly taking place. The region’s natural beauty, including lush forests, rivers, and waterfalls, offers opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking and bird watching. Overall, a trip to Ikot Okoro promises a memorable and immersive experience, with plenty to see and do.
